5 Tips to Start Exercising (again) When You Really Don’t Want To 🔥

1️⃣ Just start with something easy

If going to do a big weights session at the gym is too much, then get outside and go for a brisk walk or a light jog, just to get moving.

2️⃣ Commit to five minutes

A commitment of five minutes is a lot less daunting than a full workout. Once you are up and moving, you will more than likely keep going.

3️⃣ Remember how good it makes you feel

if you need something to help you refocus and motivate you, just remember that post-workout high.

4️⃣ Prepare your gym bag

Have your gym bag ready the night before and lay it next to your bed. Put your alarm on the other side of the room so when it goes off, you will have to get out of bed to turn it off. Once you are out of bed and your gym bag is already packed, you may as well get up and go. If you go to the gym after work, place your gym bag next to your desk. This will act as a good reminder of what you have committed to and you will be less likely to back out.

Being fit and healthy should be about making yourself feel great, having confidence and aiming to be your best.

Most of the time I love putting in my headphones, cracking open my energy drink, and smashing my workout alone. Yet some people are the opposite. There is no wrong answer. Happy Monday my fit friends! 🤙🏼 I was thinking of something encouraging and motivating to write about today, but honestly, I had nothing. I was starting to let it affect me, to bring me down, but then I told myself to stop. I'm human too. I get unmotivated just like you do. Just because I choose to share only the positive parts of my life doesn't mean I don't experience periods of feeling unmotivated. The other day, I took some pre-workout, and went to the gym with the idea of doing legs. I couldn't wake up, the pre didn't work (or maybe my mind didn't let it work). I was focusing on how much I DIDN'T want to be in the gym and I let it affect my workout. So I left. I did one exercise and left. Am I upset about it? No. Did I fall behind in reaching my goals? No. Is today a new day? YES. Can I go to the gym today? YES. Did I listen to my body? YES. Whatever you may be feeling today, just remember that tomorrow is a new day filled with new opportunities! It's ok to have an off day, we all do! Don't beat yourself up over little things. Do your best to focus on the positives! I hope you all have a FANTASTIC Monday and a great week! There are many misconceptions in the fitness industry. We all know about the misconceptions towards carbs and fasting and all that, but there are also misconceptions that lead people (including myself years ago) to think you have to train 7 days a week at the highest possible intensity to get the quickest possible results. This often leads to overtraining, poor health, fatigue, lack of recovery and lack of results unfortunately. You don't have to obliterate your body to get results and doing so won't get you faster ones. Quite opposite actually. Be patient, train intelligently, focus on recovery and get results.

A lot of people do curl this way. The bicep curl is not an exercise where you should try to show off by lifting as much as possible. You should use a weight that is comfortable for you and use proper form so that your biceps do all the work.

I remember that thought running through my mind when I tried to put on my favorite pair of shorts and I couldn’t even pull them up past my thighs 😔⁣

I sat on the bed and BAWLED MY EYES OUT. 😭⁣

I had SO MANY mean thoughts that ran through my head 👿⁣
⁣
“You aren’t capable of looking sexy.”⁣
“You’ll never be able to give up your favorite foods to have the body you want.”⁣
“Why are you even trying? Just give up and buy a bigger pair of shorts.”⁣
“Why’d you let yourself get so fat? Shame on you!”⁣
“You’re fat. Get used to it. That’s how you’ll always be.”⁣
⁣
I was completely crushed.⁣
⁣
I had all intentions of losing 10+ inches so that I was ready for shorts/swimsuit season and I was nowhere near that goal. ⁣

I couldn’t give up the food I loved. I gave into every temptation there was because FOOD was the only thing that made me feel good - at least for a short time. 😕⁣

GIRL, soon after, I learned that I didn’t have to give up the food I loved in order to lose 10+ inches. And neither do YOU!! ⁣

I lost 10+ inches and have kept them off for over 3 years now while STILL enjoying the food I love (yes, even chicken nuggets from Mickey D’s 😜 occasionally). ⁣

MOTIVATION TIP ✨ .

In my last post I spoke about no excuses. So I present you a few tips that helped me to be motivated about fitness and staying focus on my goal 👊🏽 .

1. A bomb playlist especially working out gives you that energy you need to feel like your invincible. Sometimes I even find myself working out to the beat. One great playlist I use is from Apple Music/Spotify called the fadelist from @thefadepod •

2. Working out with a friend helps with feeling more  comfortable at the gym. But choose serious motivated  friends that won’t turn the gym session into a chit chat session. I usually like going with people with more experience working out. It can be intimidating at first but you learn a lot . •

3. Make a plan! When you know what’s your fitness goal, create a plan of the exercises you want to do. You’ll feel less lost at the gym and waste less time. •

4. My fave ! Getting new sports wear really pushes me to go to the gym. Not only will you look good while you do those squats 😉, but you’ll feel great about yourself . & it helps with those gym selfies !

5. Save vids on insta! That’s also very encouraging.  When you’re sitting at home and come across a workout vid, you just feel like shit and just want to get up and go workout. Also, it helps you have many ideas on exercises to do at the gym. Start by saving my videos 🤗🤗 •

6. Track your progress ! Listen , this journey is long and sometimes you feel like there are no changes to your body. But trusst me, it’s changing right below your eyes. MOTIVATION TIP ✨ .

In my last post I spoke about no excuses. So I present you a few tips that helped me to be motivated about fitness and staying focus on my goal 👊🏽 .

1. A bomb playlist especially working out gives you that energy you need to feel like your invincible. Sometimes I even find myself working out to the beat. One great playlist I use is from Apple Music/Spotify called the fadelist from @thefadepod

2. Working out with a friend helps with feeling more comfortable at the gym. But choose serious motivated friends that won’t turn the gym session into a chit chat session. I usually like going with people with more experience working out. It can be intimidating at first but you learn a lot . •

3. Make a plan! When you know what’s your fitness goal, create a plan of the exercises you want to do. You’ll feel less lost at the gym and waste less time. •

4. My fave ! Getting new sports wear really pushes me to go to the gym. Not only will you look good while you do those squats 😉, but you’ll feel great about yourself . & it helps with those gym selfies !

5. Save vids on insta! That’s also very encouraging. When you’re sitting at home and come across a workout vid, you just feel like shit and just want to get up and go workout. Also, it helps you have many ideas on exercises to do at the gym. Start by saving my videos 🤗🤗 •

6. Track your progress ! Listen , this journey is long and sometimes you feel like there are no changes to your body. But trusst me, it’s changing right below your eyes. So the best way to see that it’s by constantly photographing yourself ( don’t go over board tho) but throughout the months you’ll see that that hard work is paying off. •

A superset places two exercises back to back, generally with little to no rest between. Supersets are popular for a variety of reasons - increased workout efficiency (two birds, one rest break), ability to fatigue muscles using lighter weights / without a spotter, increased cardiovascular fitness effect, and the addition of some variety to a training routine! 
There are a few techniques for supersetting:

1. Different Muscle Groups
A1) Goblet Squat
A2) DB Bench Press - There is some fitness benefit to this strategy, but this is done primarily for efficiency as the muscles involved are completely different. Can be used for general strength or hypertrophy training. Useful if you need to get in and out of the gym quickly! 
2. Opposing Muscle Groups
A1) Rope Tricep Pushdown
A2) DB Hammer Curl
- Used frequently in bodybuilding circles, exercises for opposing muscle groups (back and chest, thighs and hamstrings, biceps and triceps) are paired. As one muscle group contracts, the opposing group relaxes, providing a complementary workout with minimal impact to strength in either exercise. Excellent for muscle growth and training efficiency in high volume programs!

3. Same Muscle Groups
A1) DB Shoulder Press
A2) DB Lateral Raise
- Typically used for muscular endurance and hypertrophy, this is more of an advanced training method. Two exercises that target the same muscle group (generally a compound and an isolation or two isolation exercises) are done in succession to fatigue a specific muscle group. Performance will drop off due to muscular fatigue, but if your goals are muscle isolation and hypertrophy, give this one a try!

Supersetting can be a great strategy for maximizing your time in the gym, breaking through plateaus, and for adding some variety BUT they aren’t necessary. Depending on your goal, it can be helpful to build up your strength in single exercises for 4-8 weeks, and then add in supersets that suit your goals for a change in pace.

The most commonly known source is fish, but there are plenty of ways to obtain it without consuming fish or fish oils.

The 3 main types of Omega-3s are ALA (short chain), DHA and EPA (long chains). The sources shown contain ALA so in order to obtain DHA and EPA, our bodies convert the ALA.

Can our bodies convert enough for optimal health?

Absolutely!

The servings shown provide optimal amounts of ALA for our bodies to convert into the necessary DHA and EPA. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends 100-250mg a day depending on your age.

If you are not able to consume one of these sources daily, a supplement can be a good alternative. Since fish get their Omega-3s from algae, there are now many algae oil supplements available with pre-converted DHA and EPA.

And it is recommended that pregnant women take an Omega-3 supplement.

WORKOUT SUCCESS GUIDE

First, make sure you dress for success.
-Too many times I have put on shorts leading to chaffing or a bra that does nothing for support. These issues made me have to cut my workout short due to pain or discomfort.
-Not today - I wore long seat-proof leggings that had firm control at the top so they don't fall down while running or chafe. I also made sure to wear the right sports bra.
-For socks, I do gekks which are just more comfortable for me for running.

Second, monitor your ❤️ rate. If you are running or doing any cardio, make sure you check-in a few times to see where you are at. This will vary per person but for me, if I am in the 180s, that is too high and I don't want to have a heart attack so I back off and slow it down a bit or reduce the intensity.

Third, smile at people. They will smile back and everyone here can use encouragement.

Fourth, make sure your playlist is banging! I am listening now to Hot Girl Bummer. Hilarious and up beat. The free music app Musi is good too. You can legit just find a song, hear it and then when you have several, you automatically have a playlist (favorites) ready to rock with you.

Last, recovery - stretching and drinking water is important for your muscles! Don't skip this.

Here’s the ab work I did at the end of my upper body strength workout posted earlier today.

I don’t normally train abs like this (for the burn type ground circuits). I prefer to stick to one or two exercises, focusing on progressive overload and as much stimulus as possible.

But it’s nice to change things up. Even for just a mental break.

Not to mention the variety of exercises really leads to a complete core workout.

Rest about 10 seconds between each exercise, and about 60-90 seconds between sets.

Glutes... are yours actually working? Do you feel your low back fatigue before your glutes burn? 
People often thrust their hips as high as possible in attempt to work their bum. But...did you realize that the extra extension of the hips mostly comes from arching or extending your low back?

This technique will activate your core before performing a hip thrust. Notice how your core & glutes work simultaneously, taking the low back out of the equation. Try it out & tell me what you think!

Did you know that a wider grip on pull-ups and pull downs actually works less of your lats than going narrower? People seem to get very angry when I tell them this. Using a narrower grip will increase your range of motion, engage your lats more, and allow you to use more weight. All of these will yield better lat growth.

Going wide isn’t necessarily “wrong” but it actually targets more of the teres major, which is a smaller muscle above the lats. If that’s what you’re going for, that’s fine. However, most people going wide are doing so with the thought that it’s the way to go for maximum lat involvement. Personally, the widest I ever go on pull-ups and pull downs is slightly outside shoulder width like I’m doing here. For pull downs, I actually prefer the narrow V attachment instead of the one I’m using here although this is a standard attachment found in just about every gym.

Two other common mistakes people make when doing lat pulldowns is leaning too far back/using momentum and the opposite which is sitting too upright while failing to lean back at all. Instead, you want to lean back slightly, retract your scapula, stick your chest up, and pull to around your upper chest while making sure you are pulling with your elbows. ××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××
