As soon as I became a registered dietitian, I signed up to become a preceptor with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND).⁣
⁣
Throughout my education, I felt there was a disconnect between what we were learning in school and the practical application of dietetics in various socioeconomic and cultural populations. I knew that as a person of color myself, I could help future RDs understand what was missing in their education so that they may have a more realistic understanding of what they will face when entering the workforce.⁣
⁣
It is important to note that I'm an outlier in the field of dietetics. Out of 93,320 individuals registered with the Commission of Dietetic Registration, only 2.6% are African American/Black. The majority of dietitians are white at 81.1%. ⁣
⁣
These are interesting statistics because it means a majority of nutrition policies and guidelines that come from the Academy are developed by a majority white cohort and don’t necessarily reflect all populations. This is problematic at least for the black population, because historically, there is a level of mistrust between black communities and healthcare. Empirical evidence indicates people of color receive less care — and often worse care — than white Americans. Reasons include lower rates of health coverage; communication barriers; and racial stereotyping based on false beliefs.⁣
⁣
And now, in the age of COVID-19, where brown and black people are disproportionately succumbing to this virus in staggering numbers that eclipse their white counterparts, I am more determined than ever to stand up and mentor young dietitians of color who are looking to enter the field. ⁣
⁣
I will also continue to provide preceptorship for interns looking for practical experience in the business of being a dietitian and running a private practice. More importantly, I will impress upon any intern with me to develop content with a critical eye, accommodating cultural diversity and the health needs of various populations and groups. ⁣
⁣
I’m calling all registered dietitians and RD2BEs to continue to petition the Academy to recognize the racial disparities in healthcare and actually DO something about it!

Breaking a habit is challenging - it takes discipline, time and a lot of tough love - but it’s worth it 💫

(1) count your blessings → refocus your energy and reflect on all that you have already! Think about how lucky you are to have what you have. Remind yourself every day that there is so much good in your life 💛

(2) focus on your strengths → change gears from always focusing on your weaknesses and celebrate what you’re good at!! We’re all good at something; take some time to find what it is that’s yours ✨
.
(3) learn to love enough → if you’re constantly comparing, you’ll always want what others have. It’s a vicious cycle that will never lead to happiness because you’ll always be looking for that next thing. Learn to realize that what you have is already enough. You’re so incredibly lucky to be alive - appreciate it and know that you are enough ☀️

Have you heard this piece of advice before? .

Never step on the scale at night. You’ve heard that right? I have learned not to. The funny part is that I have not owned a working scale in probably a year… And while I am here on vacation, my sister-in-law has a scale and I asked if I could use it so that I could get a gauge for what I actually weigh.

When I saw my family that I hadn’t seen in many months they all had said that I had lost weight and looked great but to me I felt like I was actually bloated and not looking my best.
.
.
I had a day where I was not totally dialed in on my nutrition and had the treats that you do on vacation… heavy dinner and pie for dessert with a glass of wine. This was two days ago. And I was just about to go to bed and I stepped on the scale and I was... shocked! .
.
According to my fully clothed night time weight, I was 20 lbs down! But it didn’t happen overnight. .
.
I looked back to all the notes I had taken in my phone of my current weight and the progress that I had made over the past two years.  This took time. This took course correcting. It took consistency and getting back to my focus anytime I strayed. It took throwing out the shame train. .
.
As I lifted skittles to my mouth yesterday afternoon, someone said are you allowed to have that with your diet? .
.
I delightfully replied with, it’s all about balance. I love candy, but I can’t eat all of it. I love healthy foods, but I don’t believe in deprivation. That leads to failure in my experience. And I’ve gotten to where I am with this balance and self-awareness. .
.
So be kind to yourself, have balance and you’ll make forward progress. .

I used to work with a trainer.
She would hand me weights that were heavier than I'd used before.

My first reaction was "I can't do that. It's too heavy." But as I worked with her, I realized if she knew I could, then maybe she was right.

And she was.
I discovered my limited beliefs about what my body could do was holding me back.
And I discovered I could lift the weights she gave me.

And wow- did it feel good. 💪

Day 17: Trainer Robert said it’s Willful Wednesday 😳

After 16 days of training 🏋️ 6 days a week several times a day, today was the day I was not feeling it!  It took all I had to make my way to the gym. But I told myself just go and give it 20 minutes! 
Of course, when I see both trainers standing there 🙄 as I walk up, I knew there was no walking away after 20 minutes even if I wanted too 😭. Trainer Robert was right, it was definitely Willful Wednesday on all levels.  You truly had to have the will to complete the 3 rounds of complete craziness that he created where he had you pretty much on all fours for all exercises!  What type of crazy trainer thinks up banded bear crawls or better yet ladder bear crawls with zig zagging 🥵?! Needless to say I was sweating 😓 buckets after 3 rounds.  Oh beware though we weren’t finished 😩. The final exercise after 2 others was bird dogs and I thought finally some reprieve and rest. Bird dogs 🦅 🐕 are easy right?  Well hell no! Not after all that we just did.  In the end I pretty much had a puddle of water 💦 under me 🥵🥴😴. However, it’s days like this when you aren’t feeling it and that ya gotta give it all you got especially when ya got goals!  I’m grateful though that I have two trainers that won’t let me fail or give up.  The only way (I believe) to live life is to surround yourself with friends and family that want to see you succeed 💜💎💪🏼 Day #17of153

I got married young. I had kids young. I've worked in a leadership capacity in the educational world young. For a lot, im a young health coach.

I chose all of these things. I have no regret over these things and I have now learnt to not take on other peoples opinions over these things.

Binaural beats! 🎶 What are they are why should we be interested in them?

At this time more than ever, we need to stay connected to ourselves and our truth.

Meditation, as I am sure you have all heard about many times, is an incredible form of stillness, connection and love for yourself. But if you are anything like me, it can be hard to find the time to be in this zone of stillness and compassion when you are so so busy. And even when you can find the time, maintaining that feeling throughout your day is more than a challenge.

So, lets celebrate binaural beats yaaaaaay!!! Binaural beats between 1 and 30 Hz claim to create the same brainwave pattern would occur during meditation. When listening to the sounds at a particular frequency, it is said that your brain waves will synchronize with the same frequency.

It is believed that your brain will stimulate the effects of meditation at these frequencies – the perfect sound to chuck on in the background while studying, working or just going through the day to day.

Although there is much more research to be done to prove these effective, many people (including myself) have benefited from these.

We must practice extreme SELF CARE right now. Not only is it necessary for our mental health & physical health, but for those around us too. People mirror each other so if you're taking care of yourself you'll inspire others to do the same. With all that is going on in the world & USA 🇺🇸 right now there's also a lunar eclipse on Friday. We are receiving a tremendous amount of energy and electricity from all around us. You may be feeling extremely wired, restless yet tired and exhausted all at once. Your mind may be on overdrive & obsessing. Your body may be achy more than normal, you may not be sleeping well. You may be feeling mad, sad, depressed, angry, hurting in your heart. You may be reviewing the last decade or more of your life realizing wondering what has been holding you back & what no longer serves you. How can you release it? Your body, mind, spirit, heart and soul is begging, pleading for something new and fun. You may be reviewing your emotional & physical needs & how they are OR are not being met. What is lacking & how can you change it. What needs to go, what needs to stay. Mentally physically we are purging & it's a very emotional, sensitive time for all of us. It's time to let go & release so we can manifest the exact life we've been wanting, thinking & dreaming about for the last few years. You can absolutely have it. It may be scary but you have to push through your blocks. Secrets & hidden truths are being revealed & discovered from the past. Lean into it, lean on God.
