The Nahuatl name “Tlecuauhtlacupeuh” roughly translates to “She who emerges from the region of light & music and intones a song, like the Eagle of fire.” Through Mexico’s complicated colonial history, the essence of Tlecuauhtlacupeuh was transformed by the Spaniards to Guadalupe b/c of the similarities of their pronunciations & she also reminded them of their Virgin Mother in Spain. It is understood this is where the connection to “Tonantzin,” which in Nahuatl translates to “Our Sacred Mother,” is also related.
It’s important we know the Indigenous history of the “Virgin of Guadalupe” celebrated today. ✨✨✨Art by GM Maeve ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

A Prayer to our Blessed Mother,
Our Lady of Guadalupe
– Dear mother, we love you. We thank you for your promise to help us in our need. We trust in your love that dries our tears and comforts us. Teach us to find our peace in your son, Jesus, and bless us every day of our lives.
- Help us to build a shrine in our hearts. Make it as beautiful as the one built for you on the mount of Tepeyac. A shrine full of trust, hope, and love of Jesus growing stronger each day.
- Mary, you have chosen to remain with us by giving us your most wonderful and holy self-image on Juan Diego's cloak. May we feel your loving presence as we look upon your face. Like Juan Diego, give us the courage to bring your message of hope to everyone.
- You are our mother and our inspiration. Hear our prayers and answer us. Amen.

The Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe (Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe) Tonantzin #diadelavirgendeguadalupe #virginofguadalupe #virgendeguadalupe

Today is a special day for millions of Catholics who will celebrate Mexico’s Patron Saint, the #VirginOfGuadalupe.
.
It’s believed that on December 9, 1531, the Virgin Mary first appeared to an indigenous man named Juan Diego in Mexico and then again on December 12. So on this holy day, believers honor Mexico's patron saint, #laVirgendeGuadalupe.
.
Her image has become a powerful symbol of Mexican identity and is associated with everything from motherhood and faith to feminism and culture.
.
Thanks to @velmascafe for this beautiful mural on the wall of their cafe in #SouthGate.

It's still stewing, all the things it ties in.. in regards to pre-spanish indigenous women, the story of the Virgin of Guadalupe, to Native Children being taken from their families to break their spirits, to the Cherokee women in this original photograph that I resonated so strongly with sitting there pondering her fate while pregnant in 1936, surrounded by her children.

To resonate with modern current events when indigenous immigrant women like 20 year old Claudia Gómez González are shot point blank in the head by US border patrol officers to set an example. When thousands of migrant children are being forcibly seaparated from their mothers and families.
This piece covers conversation from 1531, when an Indigenous Nahuatl man first saw that apparition of "mother of the very true deity" to the forced removal and separation of Native children over the last 500 years through the rise and colonization of the Americas.
Immigrant. Migrant. To travel. Nomadic. Mother. But we have always been here. And so we are not visitors. We are caretakers. We are mother's. We are creators of future generations. We are more powerful than you know. We are keepers of this resiliency that will not die.

On this day last year I observed the people in the city of Puerto Vallarta celebrate the Virgin of Guadalupe.
Here’s what I learned:
The Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe (Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe) is a popular Catholic feast that celebrates the belief that a man encountered the Virgin Mary, Mexico's patron saint, in Mexico City on December 9 and 12, 1531.

I’m sure the city is alive with joy and energy right now.

Today is the Feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe and the final day of #twelvedaysofmary. I loved uncovering and meditating on a card each day. Today is Stella Maris, the Star, our guiding light who points the way to True North. ⭐️ As Hettienne writes in the guidebook to the Mysteries of Mary Tarot Deck: “She is a reminder of the paradoxical nature of this world: that both are true at the same time and only creativity can bring unity between the opposing forces within ourselves and in our perception of the world.” A much needed message in the world today.
🌟
Many thanks to Hettienne @walkingwithmary and all of the participants on this beautiful voyage. I look forward to continuing the journey together.

(Sound on) Beautiful day today, I had the wonderful experience to participate in the procession of Our Lady of Guadalupe while praying the rosary. In addition to that, my family hired a Mexican band to play to her and after that we prayed the rosary with around 40 other people. Great way to celebrate Our Mother's day 💖

Codex Tetlapalco (detail), ca. 1450–1557. Valley of Mexico. 13/6913
▫️
"To many people, she is not either/or, but rather one: Tonantzin/Guadalupe. Her blend of Indigenous and European features represents the beauty and sacredness of both cultures.” —Griselda Alvarez Sesma (Mestiza, of Yaqui/Mexica heritage)
▫️
December 12 is the Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe. The appearance of the Virgin is one of the significant events in the history of the Mexica (Aztec) people recorded on this codex.
▫️
The top part of the manuscript deals with the Spanish Conquest of the Valley of Mexico. The large cross associated with the year 1526 represents the coming of the Franciscans. Above the cross, associated with the year 1531, is an image of the Virgin Mary. In December of that year, a Christianized Indian called Juan Diego encountered a woman at the top of Tepeyac Hill. Speaking Nahuatl, she identified herself as Cenquizca Ichpochtzintli, Santa Maria de Guadalupe. She commanded Juan Diego to tell the archbishop of Mexico of her wish to see a sanctuary built in her honor at that site.
▫️
It has been suggested that this story persisted as a way to explain the conversion of the people of Mexico to Christianity. But the history is not that simple. Before Contact, Tepeyac Hill was the site of a temple dedicated to Tonantzin (Our Mother), the Nahuatl goddess of earth and fertility. The people who first venerated Our Lady of Guadalupe drew inspiration from their worship of Tonantzin, and their continuing to refer to the Virgin as Tonantzin greatly disturbed Spanish missionaries. Native people accepted the Virgin of Guadalupe on their own terms. She became a symbol of hope and survival in the ruins of conquest and colonial repression.
▫️
Griselda Alvarez Sesma’s quotation originally appeared in Indian Country News.
▫️
The codex text is adapted from a piece by Nancy Rosoff, curator of the pre-Columbian and Native American art collections of the Brooklyn Museum, in the book Creation’s Journey: Objects of Native American Identity and Belief, published in 1994 for the opening of our museum in New York.

Amen.

"Hoy," dijo, "hoy voy hacerles tortillas de harina" is the title ("Today," she said, "today I'm going to make you flour tortillas" in English), my newest drawing, just in time for the feast day of the Virgin of Guadalupe and for this Saturday evening's opening reception for @avenue50studio exhibition dedicated to La Lupita.
