I’m often asked what supplements I would recommend for general health. Curcumin is one of them. Why? The evidence is growing for multiple health benefits and I highly doubt you get enough turmeric in your diet anyways. Do you need to supplement with curcumin? No. But there seems to be benefits to adding this into your life. Plus it’s not pricey.

Most people use turmeric for its anti-inflammatory properties. It’s important to note that the anti-inflammatory compound within turmeric is curcumin. They’ve become increasingly popular in the health industry over the years, & for good measure- there is some concrete science 🔬 behind HOW & WHY they can be effective.

First- what ARE they🤷🏼‍♂️? BCAA = “🔗Branch chain amino acids” which is a powdered form of amino acids. When we eat any kind of PROTEIN🍗🍳🥜 in our diets, our small intestine breaks that protein down into its building blocks🔎, AMINO ACIDS💡. __
BCAAs can therefore surpass the digestion process🔀, absorb directly into your blood⤵️, & go straight to ya muscles (& other cells)↗️ w/o any delay.

Ingestion of amino acids stimulates a bodily process called “MUSCLE PROTEIN SYNTHESIS” (or just MPS). MPS helps us BUILD & MAINTAIN muscle mass💪🏼. For people with low dietary protein intake, BCAA supplementation can promote muscle protein synthesis and increase muscle growth over time. Supplementation can also be used to prevent fatigue in novice athletes.

Leucine plays an important role in muscle protein synthesis, while isoleucine induces glucose uptake into cells. Further research is needed to determine valine’s role in a BCAA supplement.

Supplementing BCAAs prevents a serum decline in BCAAs, which occurs during exercise. A serum decline would normally cause a tryptophan influx into the brain, followed by serotonin production, which causes fatigue.

BCAAs are important to ingest on a daily basis, but many protein sources, such as meat and eggs, already provide BCAAs. Supplementation is unnecessary for people with a sufficiently high protein intake (1-1.5g per kg of bodyweight a day or more).

Are energy drinks 🥤 BAD for you?

People associate energy drinks with a long list of "chemical" ingredients, high sugar content, + dangerous health effects.

Are they truly terrible? Let’s look at the MAIN ingredients 📄. - ✅Niacin, Inositol, pyridoxal phosphate (vitamin b6), cyanocobalamin (vitamin b12) are ALL water-soluble💦 vitamins to increase "energy". Nothing wrong with vitamins even when they have scary chemical names. - ✅Ginseng- “increase focus” (not high enough dosage in a can to help) BUT 🚫 can also cause GI distress. - ✅Taurine- an antioxidant- improves blood flow, increases heart health❣️, + increases insulin sensitivity. - ✅Artificial sweeteners 🍭- sugar replacement. You have to consume 10+ cans of sugar-free drinks to hit your "adequate daily intake" laid out by the FDA. You’re good unless they adversely affect you + you are aware of this. - ✅Caffeine- increases alertness/performance- Health Canada advises a MAX CONSUMPTION of 400mg /day. With a can of Monster + Starbucks coffee, you've already exceeded that (Between 2005-2011, there were almost 80k emergency room 🚑 visits from too much caffeine!). SO looking at the ingredients INDIVIDUALLY ☝🏻, I don't think there are any "safety issues" based on current research except with caffeine.

As for INTERACTING 🙅🏼‍♀️ ingredients, there are many theories, but nothing backed up by reliable enough research.

The problem I have is with the sugar-FILLED varieties. They drive up “empty” caloric intake + can play a role in obesity (NOT the cause, but can be a cofounding variable). Over-consuming caffeine ☕️ is ALSO unhealthy + can lead to adverse heart health effects.

My take-way? Be MODERATE with your energy drinks. Steer clear if you don't trust the ingredients 🙅🏼‍♀️ or it makes you feel crappy. If you drink it for energy, opt for the sugar-FREE variety + don't exceed more than one can a day (Teens/kids, people with digestive problems, + pregnant/breastfeeding women should STAY AWAY due to the health effects of caffeine/ginseng). Remember- ❗️ANYTHING can be harmful if you consume enough of it- "poison" is determined by the dosage- not the product itself.

They take forever to dissolve, and that’s the point. The longer the zinc is in contact with your throat, the more it inhibits viral replication.

Oscillococcinum—This is my first time trying this homeopathic remedy after it sat in my cabinet all flu season last year. It seems to be working so far. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I know many practitioners who swear by it.

Silver nasal spray—many also swear by silver, but it kind of scares me. During residency, I saw a person who had permanently turned gray from excessive silver use, so I proceed with caution. I do have to say, though, this made my nose so much better almost immediately. I don’t think I could have slept at all last night without it.

Biocidin Throat Spray—Biocidin is a combination of several antimicrobial herbs that really packs a punch. I had it on hand for a protocol I did many moons ago and have found it to be super helpful for my throat at the beginning of a viral illness.

Now—it bears mentioning that this is NOT medical advice for you, but that you may want to bring up some of these ideas with your own practitioner. And please, do it BEFORE you get sick. Having something on hand is the best way to get ahead of it and recover quickly!

if you’re just starting on your journey to health, and you read something that says you need 2g of protein per kg of body weight; you will be going from an average of 60g of protein (maybe some eggs and your chicken dinner as your main sources of protein)⠀

up to 200g of protein depending on your weight (protein at every meal and every snack throughout the day).⠀
.⠀
That is a MASSIVE change to your eating habits.⠀
.⠀
If you set yourself the goal of eating at least 100g of protein per day you will learn...⠀
.⠀
1️⃣ How much protein is in your meat, dairy, eggs, etc.⠀
2️⃣ How to start incorporating protein in ways that you can MAINTAIN⠀
3️⃣ How to enjoy it and start to crave it (maybe more than carbs 😜)⠀

Now yes, there is plenty of evidence that a higher protein (1.6g+/kg) is better for building muscle, maintaining muscle during weight loss, and overall optimizing health but you need to start with what is maintainable for you, and then build on that!⠀

According to Dr. Tod Cooperman (founder of Consumerlab, an online supplement analysis company reporting on the quality of dietary supplements since 1999) the daily value information that you see on supplement labels are in many cases incorrect.

The basis for his concerns are that daily values were developed in 1968 and earlier and were not updated to reflect the latest science until 2016. .

In 2016, the FDA decided to increase the daily values for 8 different vitamins and minerals and decrease it for about 12 based on the latest information provided by the Institute of Medicine, which sets the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDAs) and Adequate Intake (AIs). These were significant changes, sometimes doubling or even quadrupling in one direction or the other.

However, according to Dr. Cooperman, with the products on the market today, the labels generally don’t reflect these new daily values. So, for example, if you see 100% of Vitamin D, you’re actually probably getting 50% of the daily value for Vitamin D.

Dr. Cooperman also explains that Upper Limit levels or ULs rarely appear on supplements labels causing a concern for potential toxicity. Additionally, many products don’t contain the specific amounts printed on the labels.

What steps can we take as consumers to ensure that we are getting what our body's need and what we are paying for?
