What’s your first body part you’re training after lockdown 🤔 ⤵️⁣

Today I got to FINALLY train again using free weights and it was one of the best gym sessions I’ve had in a while courtesy of @tobydowlingg 🤩
⁣
It made me truly realise how important going to the gym was for both my physical and mental health pre-lockdown 💆‍♂️⁣
⁣
Today also made me realise how much I miss being able to go the gym on any given day and just tune out and train 🔥 ⁣
⁣
I am still working out from home but if I had the option to choose calisthenics and other modalities of training (e.g. resistance bands) or free weights, I’d choose the latter in a heart beat 👻⁣
⁣
On a side not I tested my 1 RM for a 225 lbs bench press and it turns out I’ve been able to maintain my strength (15 reps) which really shook me considering I haven’t lifted a barbell in over 2 months 🤯⁣
⁣
Potentially there’s been a transfer from my home-workouts into free-weight training coupled with eating enough protein and a slight calorie surplus 💯 ⁣
⁣
Applying progressive overload is crucial not only for grow more size but retaining and increasing strength too ✅⁣
⁣
p.s. this is not me now (a throwback from my pre-lockdown lifting days) (it’s chonk szn now baby ✌️😌)

1️⃣’st day back at the gym after this quarantine thang. I’m a little leaner due to lack of heavy pump for quite some time. A little lighter in weight as well.

☑️ For instance my legs: These may be the best reference considering the visual difference between a pump and a non-pump. 🔥
It’s been a few months since my legs have had a good pump = when the muscles are engorged with blood which causes the pump. (Technically called cellular swelling). After you stop exercising that specific muscle, blood gradually releases, and your muscle returns to its normal relaxed state. 😴➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
☑️ although I have not been dieting specifically, it’s been months since my body has seen a pump. Hence the leaner look even without a tight diet. I eat clean for the most part. 📚🍴

When pursuing strength and physique outcomes, the goal is to select movements you can execute effectively enough to reach proximity of failure

Depending on the intensity it seems between 4 and 0 reps to failure is the most effective zone for progress. If your exercise selection means you cannot take your sets into this range, regress it. 
#
Some effective regressions include; decreasing skill demand, move the laod, removing a layer of input, provide external stability, provide forced positioning, isolate the target joint/muscle.... Lots more coming on this

A little snippet into one of the supersets I like to do at the gym for arms as a finisher to an upper body day 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾. ⁠
Some weeks I do an upper body, lower body split versus a traditional sort of bro split. ⁠
I tend to do these sort of splits (upperbody lower body) when I've been out of the gym for a little bit to avoid putting to much stress on my muscles. ⁠
This would go on for 2 weeks training 4 times a week. Then my more focused splits start after this two week cycle. 👨🏽‍🏫👨🏽‍🏫⁠

There is no evidence that doing cardio fasted increases daily expenditure, compared to performing the same bout of cardio at a different time of the day. ⁣

Fasted cardio may “burn” more fat in comparison to fed cardio, but that is looking at things through a microscope, isolating variables that don’t really matter. Your daily energy expenditure is the overarching variable someone is working with. What you burn, and when, means nothing in the bigger picture.⁣

Finally, fasted cardio does not decrease one’s appetite. There is actually evidence to suggest that it may increase appetite in some individuals.⁣

Looking at the evidence, it’s a big thumbs down for fasted cardio. It shouldn’t be something we are forcing ourselves to do. In a lot of cases, the extra 1-2 hours of sleep we may get is much more beneficial than forcing ourselves to hit the pavement or treadmill in the early hours of the morning. Do your cardio at a time that conveniences you best, and ensure that you are managing your energy balance.
