The very first time I saw Zion National Park was at 6am, drunk AF.
It was late November of 2010.
We had driven through the night,
I finished my leg of the drive at 2am.
Then I did what I did best back then
And busted out the Jameson.
I drank until we drove up to the park as the sun started to rise.
It was magnificent.
It nearly sobered me up.
Seeing the redrock radically change color at dusk
Knocked my metaphorical dick clean off.
I put the whiskey away as I marveled in awe.
We power napped for a few hours,
Attempting to sleep off the booze.
I woke up excited to explore.
For the first time in a long time,
Alcohol was not on my mind.
We heard about some steep switchbacks
That led to an exposed hike up to a lookout.
We went for it, despite being hungover.
Our sweat smelled of booze
We were extremely dehydrated
But we powered up the best we could.
Arriving at the top of the switchbacks completely enervated,
We stopped, inhaled the valley, & gave up.
Then turned around.
But, oddly not to go back to the car & the alcohol…
Instead, we wandered around the park on foot.
For hours.
It was quite sobering.
Literally & figuratively.
It was quite healing.
Emotionally & mentally.

I wasn’t quite ready to be sober then.
But from then until 2013 when I did get sober,
I never forgot how the whole thing made me feel.
The sunrise, the hike, the failure, the exploring.
It did something to me.
And it’s kept me seeking it all since.
Nature is the present day crux of my sobriety.
All it took was an open mind & a road trip to kick the whole thing off 9 years ago.
And that’s honestly still all it takes sometimes.
Which is far from complicated.

I was punched in the eye by another patient at the hospital and suffered 3 orbital fractures as a result of the punch. I don’t remember any of it. 
On August 11th I flew from Providence, RI to Naples, FL and checked into Hazelden Betty Ford. I finally surrendered to my disease and knew it was time to dive head first into recovery. I spent 30 days as a residential client and transitioned to 8 weeks of intensive outpatient directly after. Hazelden laid the ground work for me, but Alcoholics Anonymous and, most importantly, my higher power, have been the main reasons I’ve been able to get sober and STAY sober for as long as I have. Today I celebrate 100 days clean and sober.

I’m  Natalie Jill (Hollan) and I am 48 years old and yes I had my second back surgery yesterday.

I shared about my surgery on my last post and sooo many of you  messaged me or commented that I should have “covered my birthdate and age and last name ” on the wrist band.
-
I’m PROUD to be 48 and 
I shout it from the roof tops. Why there is a stigma around age, sharing it, asking about it, announcing it is beyond me! At 48 I’m just getting started and believe we are never too old and it is never too late.

For those of you worried about sharing your birthdate and name guess what- google knows already. You can find ANYONES age on google. And their last name, and so much more. You could also easily know I’m married to @life_of_brooksie whose last name is “Hollan” soooo there is that 😂

I’m recovering quite well today from surgery! I sneezed with NO PAIN in my lower back for the first time in YEARS. I do have major sciatica (nerve pain) down my left leg right now which was expected after the surgery. Dr. said that it Should subside within two weeks.

The biggest challenge right now is not sitting or driving. Standing, walking, lying down all ok 😊
-
Using these two weeks to relax, heal, Get Back To “BASIX” (as I call it you’ll learn more about that soon!) I will recover and come back stronger than ever! I KNOW THIS with every drop of my being!

Recovery starts today for me... Here is what I am doing:

Re reading my own @aginginreverse_book especially the intro.
-
No grains, dairy or sugar (all cause inflammation)
-
Walking daily
Visualizing and meditating on healing
I’m legit Relaxing
Taking Turmeric, fish oil, bromaline, arnica, greens powder

Lots and lots of hydration, Whole natural unprocessed foods, mega phyto nutrients from veggies and fruits

Oh and I’m tracking everything and I’m thinking about doing a Back To BASIX challenge in January to help you all shed the weight, tone up, lessen the pain and start Aging In Reverse! Would you be IN if I did a Back To BASIX challenge for you?  I spell it with and X bc I am going to  X out the information overload we’ve all been fed! 💗

¡Hola! No, no es mi comida de hoy... Pero di la de hace 3 sábados 😂. Hoy comeré lentejas de verduras y de postre una naranja. .
Me paso para decir que después de muchos meses el lunes tuve mi primer día entero contenta. No me comí la cabeza con nada y me reí mucho. Mi novio estaba muy contento y me dijo que le encantaba verme así, que Ojalá más días yo contenta y con ganas de hacer cosas y tonterías y la verdad es que me gustó que me dijera eso porque hizo que me diese cuenta que eso es lo que quiero. .
A pesar de eso, ayer fue horrible. Mi imagen corporal está por los suelos y se lo comenté a mi madre; al igual que le dije que la cena de ayer (pan con tomate, queso, embutido y 5 o 6 patatas) me hizo sentir muy mal conmigo misma y eso la enfadó. Me ha dicho ya mil veces que cuando vaya al pueblo no me va a dejar a volver ir a la unvirsidad porque mis padres no estan tranquilos estando yo así... Lo ha dicho ya tantas veces que no sé si va de farol o qué. .

So I'm going to do 1 week of myth busting posts about children and trauma. So here goes for my 1st post!

Children who have experienced trauma have brains that are wired for protection. This means all information coming into their brain is scanned for danger (real or perceived) and this results in the child being hypervigilant (wary of people, places and environments). The child's behaviour results as a way to protect themselves and keep themselves safe ie. fight, flight, freeze, fawn response.

So I'm going to do 1 week of myth busting posts about children and trauma. So here goes for my 1st post!

We only acknowledge small faults in order to make it appear that we are free from great ones. There is nothing quite so intimidating as taking a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. It’s no wonder we’re tempted to avoid the challenge of this Step in our recovery. One way to make an inventory easier is to do it with the help of our Higher Power. To face ourselves as we are - and as we have been in the past - can be overwhelming unless we are sustained by God’s unconditional love. We only acknowledge small faults in order to make it appear that we are free from great ones. There is nothing quite so intimidating as taking a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. It’s no wonder we’re tempted to avoid the challenge of this Step in our recovery. One way to make an inventory easier is to do it with the help of our Higher Power. To face ourselves as we are - and as we have been in the past - can be overwhelming unless we are sustained by God’s unconditional love. I'm feeling a bit sickish (hopefully that's only my imagination as my flight to Singapore is in 5 days and while always being inconvenient, I really do not want to get sick now), so I decided to change my usual cold muesli bowl to a warming tumeric porridge. 
Tumeric is a real superfood, it's anti-inflammatory, a natural painkiller and even anticarcinogenic. While, to my knowledge, you'd have to consume unreal amounts of tumeric to actually profit from all these benefits, it sure does no harm to add some tumeric to your food when in need of that extra boost.

this morning was really not good. the temptation to restrict was so high.

I had to breathe to calm myself down and talk to my mother a bit. 
I decided to stay at home instead of going to school, and even if I did not want to have a breakfast, I still did. because if I do not do it, I will never change and I will always stay in my ed. 
it is not life that I want to live. 
So, I eat my breakfast and I plan to rest. because that's what my body and mind need.  I hope that you all are ok. take care of yourself. One of my favourite things that I love about feeding our tiny tribe is simply spectating and allowing their natural intuition when it comes to food.

Over the weekend I asked Miss 2 what she would like for breakfast. Her answer was pasta!

My first response was to say it isn’t really a breakfast food, but who on earth made up that rule anyways!? If she feels like pasta, then let’s make a breakfast pasta!
.
This little creation combines the idea of a pasta bake with a frittata.
.
The texture and flavour was perfection and I am completely converted. Pasta at breakfast is now a thing!
.
The leftovers kept perfectly in the fridge and were devoured as a snack and as a lunch with a side salad.
.
This would make the perfect breakfast if you rush between training and work on a weekday!
.
The only time consuming bit was having to cook the pasta first, so if you have leftover pasta awaiting in the fridge - this recipe is a winner!! (Particularly if you have very impatient little humans at your heels!)
.
This recipe will be launched next week on your dashboard, so if you are shopping over the weekend, all you will need are eggs, pasta, a range of veggies (it is very forgiving), cherry toms, an onion, garlic and some herbs.

Alrighty here we go it’s time to countdown !!! #10days 
This morning I woke up at 7am and had a nice 20 minute stretch before having breakfast. Today was going to be a long hot day ahead. At 11am I headed to get my final massage. This was just what was needed to make me feel even better. I want to say a massive thank you to Elise from @yourcompletewellness_vic I would not have been able to get through this crazy year with out you and the massages were there when I needed them most so thank you!!! I finished off and then made my way to bialik for my last shift of the year.  Due to the weather being 40+ degrees sport was cancelled so we took the kids to an aquatic centre. Look it wasn’t very entertaining but it sure was hot. That rounded out my afternoon. Today is a sad day because it marks my last Thursday run squad for the year.  Thursday’s have been my favourite session and it has been where I have learnt the most about my self.  Luckily the cool change came because tonight we ended up doing 5x 300m effort with 100m recovery and 5x500m efforts. I never thought I was going to be cold and wet and the end of the run tonight. Overall a very overwhelming last session and it’s time to eat and rest up !!!

Some days are just harder than others but that's totally normal, whether you struggle with an ED or not. It's human so don't beat yourself up if you're not at your A game.

Yesterday was tough for me. I passed my exam but I did make some stupid mistakes because I was so nervous. The whole situation made me uncomfortable & I was trembling like hell. I then decided to do some research for writing class. I'm going to write about the struggle to find the right therapy for people with ED's & reading through all these articles left me quite down & hopeless.

However, today is a new day. I woke up & felt super motivated to change something & to fight. I don't even know why but it shows me again that recovery is not just rainbows & delicious food. It's tough but it's also the chance of a better life. ❤️
