@ontariopowerliftingassociation asked me to do a post highlighting my accomplishments in the sport for their athlete profile series prior to CPU nationals.  I find this somewhat awkward but sometimes reflection is a good thing so here’s a summary. I’ve been powerlifting competitively since 2014.  In that time I’ve accomplished many things including 5 time national open champion; multiple open and masters national records in squat, bench and total.  I’ve had the privilege of representing Canada many times in both World and other international championships.  Notable accomplishments internationally include world champion in bench press for M1 and third in open 2019; Best lifter Bench worlds M1 ; commonwealth and North American champion; bench medal at classic 3 lift worlds; second place at Arnold’s. I’m heading into my 7th national championship and I’m not entirely sure what it’s going to look like as of yet. After my best training cycle in years this fall, I’m battling some significant injuries, but I’ll be there. #powerlifting #powerliftingfamily #cpu #ipf #opa #innerstrengthproducts #sbdcanada #sbdapparel

I remember being outside trying to fix my car (which has been overheating) with a friend. My neighbor in her late 50s rushed outside and asked us, “Do you all know Kobe Bryant.” We said “yes.” She said, “He just died in a plane crash.” As I sat in shock, I reflected back on his life and legacy but moreover the importance of VALUING EVERY SECOND OF EVERYDAY! We get those occasional reminders that are unfortunate BUT still of great significance: Appreciate and value life and each other! .

565x1 for a 14lb competition squat PR with some left in the tank! 😈 Feeling really confident in my squat after today. Definitely misgrooved it a little bit out of the hole, I feel like my set up was a little off since my walkout was a nightmare lol. Not bad for my first time squatting low bar in a couple months. I’m sure as competition time gets closer and I get a little more time under a squat bar everything will be dialed in for an even bigger squat!

Let’s talk about being kind to yourself . I see so many people treating others with kindness and respect and it truly makes me happy. Being human is about being kind and learning to love and forgive and treat others the way we wish to be treated. HOWEVER; it is SO EASY to forget that WE ARE HUMANS TOO. I am guilty of this I admit. I forget that I am also a person that deserves kindness and respect. If you’re reading this I want you to remember to look inward every now and then. Treat yourself with the same kindness and love that you show to others . Not only does this include being kind to yourself , it also means not allowing others to be anything but kind to you. It means removing toxicity from your life and purifying yourself. Some people will tell you that kindness is a weakness. They will say that you will get taken advantage of and walked on. I’m telling you today that kindness is a strength. It takes strength to love and forgive like no other . This also means loving and forgiving yourself. It also takes great strength to put others’ happiness aside and focus on your own if they are a detriment to your overall wellbeing . Regardless what the situation is, kindness is not a weakness. Forgiveness is not a weakness. Removing toxicity from your life is not a weakness . Strength is loving you, and removing the rot . One rotten fruit, if not removed from the rest , will spread. Soon the rot will overcome all. I challenge you to analyze your own life. Ask yourself: what can I do to be kind to myself today? What can I do to love myself today? Have I forgiven myself? Then don’t be afraid to make a change for your wellbeing. Finally , live your life for you. You only have one. Do what needs to be done and stay the course .

5 singles at 185lbs today. First day back after recovering from the flu, still don’t feel even 75% but it was nice to be moving again. Not long ago 185 was my max and now I’m able to do it with ease and not feeling well. The more you do something, the easier it becomes. But you can also learn to take things for granted. Like not focusing on bracing, foot placement, bar path etc. But being sick I had to make sure everything was executed perfectly, it allowed me to get back to the basics. Sometimes, it be like that. If I can do things on my own, not thinking a whole lot about it, then I do. But when life happens and I’m forced to slow down & focus on every movement because every movement feels like the weight of the world on my back, I learn to rely on more than just myself. It’s in those moments of complete desperation that I remember my need for constant relationship with Jesus. When life gets so hard that putting my feet on the floor feels like an act of Congress, I remember to stop and ask Him for my daily bread. When life gets so hard that making dinner without crying looks like a miracle, I remember to thank Him for the joy He’s set in my heart. It’s hard to be thankful for trials, but He’s teaching me moment by moment what that looks like. And with each moment, my trust in Him increases. Although this isn’t what I would’ve chosen, I’m grateful there’s Another in the fire standing next to me ❤️ .

Squat: 405 x 10
Bench: 315 x 10
Deadlift: 500 x 10
30 total reps for time. 
I chose these weights because these numbers are what I used to dream about for heavy singles. Stipulations are that you have to be drug free, 30 years or older, and a dad (under 200lbs body weight you can do 315, 225, 405). This was one of the most difficult/dumbest challenges I’ve ever done. My time was 7:22. Strength is probably the least important trait of a great trainer, but at the same time it’s nice to be able to walk the walk...

Recovery? What is it, and how do you know it's happening? We think there's a lot of misconception going around as to what the fabled state of being "recovered" actually is, so here's a sport science perspective.⁠

We can talk about recovery in many different layers. You can talk about it in the context of bodily "substances" like the hormones of your endocrine system, the activity of the nervous systems, glycogen replenishment, etc. For years scientists and coaches of innumerable backgrounds have worked to identify the biochemical substrates related to recovery.⁠
▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️⁠
You can also talk about it experientially. Do you "feel" recovered? This one's a loaded question because there's a whole lotta "feels" that you might experience as an athlete. You might feel sore. You might feel irritable. You might feel tired. Truthfully, you're probably feeling all three plus more. When you add this component to the one above the question of an athlete's recovery status becomes pretty complicated. So, what is recovery, actually? It's not warm and fuzzy, that's for sure!⁠
▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️⁠
The question of recovery is actually very simple. Is the athlete capable of meeting (or exceeding) a coach's or competition's performance demands? Then, guess what? That athlete is recovered. Now, recovered for what? That's where the nuance comes in. This is one of those cases where "good enough" becomes very important because once you become an advanced trainee of any sport full recovery just isn't a thing.⁠

Everyone who's trained for long enough has experienced workouts where they felt like hot trash on a summer's day, but exceeded expectation. We've also all had those sessions where it feels like the stars are aligned perfectly for us, and.... shit, 50% feels heavy AF. So what's my point? Be stoic. How things feel can be useful indicators for how you approach training. But, if the bar's moving despite you being convinced you're not recovered? Well... Think of it as an opportunity to toughen up!⁠
