I'm currently reading Mladen's book on strength training and he further adds to a post I have made in recent weeks. We have a very good idea of how to create a specific adaptation (in regards to resistance training) but we can never truly say how much an individual will improve, especially when there are multiple factors at play (which is obviously common). I like to give performance goals in my programming with athletes/clients, but I'm realistic and not reaching these goals does not mean that we have failed. There are many ways to improve someone. Test > Intervene > Retest > Evaluate. .

Contrary to popular belief, you cannot just become a diamond overnight. Jimmy Neutron might have the tech, but we do not. As athletes, we follow the rules of mother nature, it might not take thousands of years to become a beautiful diamond, but it does take thousands of hours of deliberate and purposeful work to become a diamond that can shine on the biggest stage. 🏃🏽 Running is a complex movement pattern. That being said, it shouldn’t be over complicated when it comes to coaching it 👣 Watch any child who has recently learned to run, and they will be doing this without anyone telling them to - running as close to underneath their bodies as possible. This is because this is the natural way humans learn to run, as it happens to be the most efficient 🔑 Striking the ground as close to underneath your body as possible ensures a few things:
• It means that your leg is already in the process of moving behind you, so you will hit the ground as you are simultaneously driving your body forward to the next stride
• It promotes efficient energy recycling. By landing underneath your body, you will make use of your natural elasticity (primarily through your foot-achilles-calf complex)
• Your posterior chain (from the foot to the hip and into the upper torso) can act to thrust you forward as soon as you hit the ground. Striking out front of you prevents this from happening efficiently ✅ Landing as close to underneath your body is not only the most efficient way to run (from a biomechanical and energy recycling standpoint), but it is also joint sparing. It puts less impact through your body by taking advantage of the natural elasticity/shock absorption of the posterior chain

I had one of my clients tell me the other day, “Maaaaan I’d love to be able to do *insert one of those sexy exercises that we see on IG that only athletes do*” My initial response was to say “GTFOH! You’re not ready for that!”

There are times during races, competitions, or tough training sessions that we feel we’re not going to be able to get through it. Our mind is great at nagging us with thoughts about just quitting or not pushing ourselves as hard as we possibly can. ⁠

This is the hallmark of entering an ‘Endurance Tunnel’ - those times whereby we suddenly become aware that if we are going to achieve our goal in the task at hand, we’re going to have to up our effort level enormously. ⁠

This could be at mile 21 in a marathon and we realise that if we’re going to get the PB the next 5 miles need to get progressively faster even though our legs are getting heavier with every stride. ⁠

To successfully navigate endurance tunnels you can do two key things:⁠

Repeat a mantra over and over in your mind - something as simple as “I’ve still got more beans” refocuses the mind to think about the fuel you have left to finish strong and not to worry about the fact you’re tank is more empty than it is full. ⁠
Relive past training successes in your mind - if you’re struggling to climb a hill, just take a second to think about all the successful training hill runs you’ve done in the past. Knowing that you’ve put the effort in to get a specific result will suddenly push you up a gear to get back into a strong stride. ⁠

Some days are just rough.

Didn't sleep well because this little nugget was afraid of the storms. (We built him a pillow fort and held him all night). Started out with a barista getting my name hilariously wrong...Betty. (Really?! Betty?) WTH?

Ended with someone in my building literally stealing my dinner (who does that?) then having the restaurant and two delivery guys question me about it before replacing the food nearly 2 hours after I ordered it.

At least I have good family, friends, and the promise that tomorrow is another day!

1. You have to know your purpose, if you don't know what you are doing or why you are doing it, STOP and find out! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

2. Deliberate actions is what leads to deliberate growth and improvement. If you need to get better at a specific skill or technique, find out the best approach and be deliberate in making it happen.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3. If you can find a way to keep score or to reward yourself in a way that is creative or exciting, then you've got some extremely productive days ahead of you!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4. What's Important Now? This is one of the best questions that athletes can ask themselves whenever they are frustrated, discouraged, or dealing with failure. What has happened is in the past, what's important now is where you have to put your focus if you want to have an impact.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

5. Be where your feet are. If you are at practice, be at practice both mentally and physically. If you are at home, be at home both mentally and physically. If you are with friend, be with friends both mentally and physically. If you are performing, be performing both mentally and physically. I could go on for quite some time, wherever you are, BE THERE!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

One of my favorite exercises for controlling hypermobility...the quadruped roll out.

If you've ever done down stretch or long stretch on the Reformer, this is a way to do it at home with just a foam roller.

It's great for those of us who are super bendy (I'll give more info later on how to see if you are hypermobile). There's a lot to work on and think about, so it's good for nearly any body part, too.

Here, you can see that I struggle with keeping my back neutral and controlling the motions of my shoulders compared to controlling my hips. (I've worked on my hips a lot more.) It's a fun addition to planks and there are multiple variations you can do (coming soon!)
