First session back to training 9 days after last comp , 2” deficit sumo 260kg x 5 + drop sets and 8’s on hi bar squat @ 160 which I massively undershot it turns out, will do 190 next week as it was very easy. I have Zero position (compared to normal) on my defecit  which compromises my hips and makes my back work, which is only going to be helpful as I regularly screw up position at comp and lose the lift anyway, so anything that trains me to fight through it will pay dividends. Is it real? Should you actually be eating something? Are you just bored and need something to do? Or have you truly not eaten enough today and SHOULD be giving your body that satiety?⁣
⁣
Be thoughtful, and be honest with yourself. You deserve that.⁣

2️⃣ If it’s BS, have some gum or a glass of water (or even something small/nutritious, like an apple) and find something to keep you productive instead...⁣

3️⃣ You could even plan your next legitimate meal for a certain time later on, then actually organize your day’s schedule around that.⁣

4️⃣ If it’s legit, look at what you decide to eat in the context of your day...⁣
⁣
👉🏼 Think: “Do I need something sweet to satisfy a craving? Or something of quality/substance to actually fill me with nutrients & calories?”⁣
⁣
👉🏼 If sweet, I suggest either a controlled/intentional portion of a “treat food” (i.e. an Oreo, a handful of candy, or a small cup of ice cream), OR something nutritious like a cup of frozen fruit (I always have frozen berries in stock at home)⁣
⁣
👉🏼 If it truly is time for a meal, the general priorities for me—in order—are always:⁣
⁣
✔️ It fits into my overall day’s calorie goal⁣
✔️ It tastes good/enjoyable to me⁣
✔️ It contributes to my day’s protein goal⁣
✔️ It’s filling and won’t leave me wanting more⁣
✔️ It contains lots of vitamins/minerals⁣
⁣
People are different, but this thought process works great for me, and keeps me disciplined, yet completely sane and healthy, even when dieting with a lower calorie intake.⁣

1) Track your calories and create a calorie deficit.
2) Prioritise weights over cardio.
3)Ensure you are consuming enough protein, this will help maintain muscle mass.
4) Add in cardio if you don't want to drop calories further when fat loss plateaus.

It is a big compound (multi-joint) movement and requires you to press a bar straight up over your head without using leg drive (contribution of leg movement to help the lift). To make sure that your legs do not contribute, flex your glutes (bum) and quadriceps (legs).

Make sure that you are pressing the bar straight over your head and not at an angle. I stress this as I have seen many people pressing the bar slightly in front them and not directly overhead, this will not maximise the weight that you are lifting.

To ensure that you are pressing the bar straight overhead, get a friend to video you doing your set. If you go to the gym alone just as another gym member, they will not judge you for asking them and will most likely be happy to help.

I have recently been addressing the importance of back training so here is a good compound movement for the back.
-
Start by deadlifting the bar up to the position where you are fully standing up with the bar. Then bend over with a slight knee bend and hip hinge (bend at knees and hips).

Row the bar to anywhere on your torso in a controlled manner while avoiding use of leg drive. I cannot give you an exact place to row the bar to as this will depend on your body proportions.

Advanced lifters may advise use of some leg drive but this is an intermediate to advanced technique and doing this a beginner will not make you an advanced lifter.

Remember an advanced lifter always started out as a beginner and started with these strict form techniques to progress to their current physique so make sure you start with the basics.

Words and actions start in our minds. We can see obvious results of our thoughts, but there’s also the thoughts that reinforce habits and thinking we might be better off without. Brain science has begun to talk about neuroplasticity. Our habits and thoughts become more permanent in our brains as we follow usual thought patterns. When we interrupt our habitual behavior we start to establish new pathways in our brains. Everything we do leaves an imprint in the brain. So let’s change up those thoughts. Do they matter? 😉
