For Mental Health Awareness Month, I’m sharing some of my favorite advocates, not just mental health professionals but also writers, musicians and artists who express their own process of liberation in their work so that we might all get free.

This throwback video and the caption are a perfect example of why I adore Chika. I’m learning from her as I sit with my own ideas about what it means to radically commit to my destiny even while “success” seems like a fog off in the distance. Chika reminds me that with passion it’s “use it or lose it” and so we must dispense of failure as a consideration, “perfect the skill” and “look to the sky”. I really wanna break this down line by line bc she drops SO much knowledge related to personal growth/mental wellness. Which line speaks to you and your journey?

Repost from @chikalogy - found this video of me from when i first started doing verses. i don’t know why, but this immediately brought me to tears. i had my eyes closed cuz i wanted to deliver these manifestations without distractions. i was 20 then, writing every night, hoping it would work out. and it has. thanks for supporting me. i’m eternally grateful.

Dear HIV..... For 26 years, 6 months, and 3 weeks old today we have been together you made doctors give me only 4 years to live, because of you I started cheating death at an early age of 6 months, opportunistic infections have fought me day in day out .......stigma, discrimination and rejection have haunted me because people have called me a "walking corpse ",people have lied to me about "cures" so that I can get rid of you, some people think I'm cursed coz I got you from my mum but through all that I've come out strong, resilient and never willing to give you the power over my life. 14 years ago I met ARVs they have supressed you for me, they have fought you from weakening me and from a CD4 count of 200 in 2005 to an undetectable viral load in 2019......You are my geust I am your host, I make the rules in my body I take my ARVs to supress you and everyday I remind myself that I am greater than you and I refuse to give power to a small virus that cannot speak and today on Zero discrimination day I declare myself that I AM A BEAUTIFUL STORY.

We're starting a new series to help define common (yet often misunderstood/unknown) acronyms attached to pregnancy, postpartum, labor, and reproductive health.

PCOS stands for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. This month we're joining @pcoschallenge in promoting health and awareness around this condition during PCOS awareness month.

PCOS is a genetic, hormone, metabolic and reproductive disorder that affects up to 15% of women (over 20% in some parts of the world). It is one of the most common human disorders and the most common endocrine (hormone) disorder and cause of infertility in women. It can lead to lifelong complications, psychosocial disorders, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, endometrial cancer, and other serious and life-threatening conditions.

Common signs and symptoms include irregular periods, excessive facial and body hair, severe acne, small cysts in ovaries, insulin resistance, anxiety and depression, infertility, weight gain, & male pattern baldness.

An Adjustment Disorder sometimes referred to as situational depression, is an abnormal and excessive reaction to an identifiable life stressor. The reaction is more severe than would normally be expected and can result in significant impairment in social, occupational, or academic functioning.

A. Adjustment disorders are one of the most commonly diagnosed mental health disorders.

B. During this pandemic with the mass amount of life changes and adjustments that we have had to make, day to day and week to week, it is likely to be extremely stressful to some people.

C. Due to the constant changes during the teen years and brain and hormone development in teen years. Teens are susceptible to adjustment disorders.

MYTH: People with mental health needs, even those who are managing their mental illness, cannot tolerate the stress of holding down a job.

FACT: People with mental health problems are just as productive as other employees.

It is true that Employers who hire people with mental health problems report good attendance and punctuality as well as motivation, good work, and job tenure on par with or greater than other employees.

When employees with mental health problems receive effective treatment, it can result in:

- Lower total medical costs
- Increased productivity
- Lower absenteeism
- Decreased disability costs

Imma just sit this here in case anybody else needs a mantra for this day the way I did.

I love the nicely worded, super sweet, soft pink mantra memes just as much as anybody else. But on the days when I actually need to dig deep into my own soul for a word to get me through, THIS is what comes out. THIS is what drags me forward on days when I feel like nothing I do will work out and so I just don’t wanna do anything.

If we're gonna talk about mental health and wellness frfr, let's stop pretending that the process is cute.

What do your REAL LIFE matras sound like?
Is there something that you need to just "keep fucking trying" today?

It probably goes without saying that we have all been spending a lot more time in front of screens during quarantine. For parents of teens, you may feel concerned, but also stuck, in implementing screen time rules during this time.

For now, we want to encourage you to remember “quality vs quantity.” Shift your focus from the amount of time your teen is spending in front of screens, to the quality of content they are engaging with (1 hour of scrolling is not the same as 1 hour of Zoom/FaceTime with friends).

Encourage your teens to be intentional about the quality of content they are engaging in during screen time, as opposed to limiting their time.

COVID-19, has caused unimaginable stress in our world today: illness, death of someone close to you,
medical problems, finances, relationship problems, and a suspended state of fear. Our teens are dealing
with potential grief due to loss of experiences (i.e. graduation, prom) as well as stressors due to online
school.

Experiencing stressful life events as a teen is especially challenging because, although they are old
enough to understand the stressful event emotionally and socially, they haven’t learned effective coping
or problem-solving skills to consistently deal with stress. This can lead to many mental health challenges
that, when persistent, don’t just “go away” on their own.

The first part of this is no surprise to me. I'm not one to go looking for silver linings in the midst of a pandemic, but...the second part is pleasantly surprising. Things are tough, but talking about it can ease the pain - not just for yourself, but for the people around you who may be going through similar things. This is why ending the stigma around mental health is important to me. Whether you have a mental health condition, COVID specific concerns, or both - we could all use a little break.

Most people with mental illness are not violent and only 3%–5% of violent acts can be attributed to individuals living with a serious mental illness. In fact, people with severe mental illnesses are over 10 times more likely to be victims of violent crime than the general population. You probably know someone with a mental health problem and don't even realize it, because many people with mental health problems are highly active and productive members of our communities.

It is true that Even very young children may show early warning signs of mental health concerns. These mental health problems are often clinically diagnosable, and can be a product of the interaction of biological, psychological, and social factors.

Half of all mental health disorders show first signs before a person turns 14 years old, and three quarters of mental health disorders begin before age 24.

Unfortunately, less than 20% of children and adolescents with diagnosable mental health problems receive the treatment they need. Early mental health support can help a child before problems interfere with other developmental needs.
