The reason I’m so passionate about blood sugar is because fixing mine was what changed SO many things for me AND for yearsss I never knew I had issues with it. ⁣

Last year I was diagnosed with Hashimoto thyroiditis, but I’m pretty sure that I had it for a least a 1-2 years before I finally  diagnosed it 😔.

Initially, I thought that it was chronic stress based on the symptoms of brain fog, fatigue, weight gain and IBS.  And guess what? It was stress 😬 along with other root causes 😳.

Finally, we tested my Thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPO), the most common test for autoimmune thyroid disease.  And Thyroglobulin antibody (TGAb)— this antibody targets thyroglobulin, the storage form of thyroid hormones- which causes symptoms.

Initially, I was devastated 🥺 by this diagnosis and felt embarrassed because I missed it for so long.
.
And that’s because my standard Thyroid Panel looked great- My TSH, T3, T4 and Free T3 were within normal ranges.  And therein lies the problem.

Many people are being dismissed because the initial panel looks “normal.” That doesn’t mean your immune isn’t targeting your thyroid 🦋 behind the scenes.

I am not going to lie what I found out was pretty shocking, and it made me wonder why such a common condition affecting sooooo many women was rarely spoken about !? 🤷‍♀️. I once had a woman come up to me after a Lucy Libido teaching presentation in Washington DC. I was teaching on oils for hormone balance and improving libido. I remember pausing a moment, then going off script, a bit choked up. I said something like “You know... there is a LOT of vitriol out on the Internet. So much that will tell you that you aren’t pretty enough and so much online that will teach shame and confusion within relationships. I am standing in my one small corner of the Internet speaking differently. I am here to tell you that you aren’t broken, you are enough, and that you are beautiful.” I saw a woman stand up. 💗
After the session, this woman approached me. She was clearly emotional. I thought she was approaching me to say thank you or to ask for a photo. Her words caught me off guard. She said

. “I need to let you know, that I owe you an apology”

An apology? “I almost didn’t come to your session. I almost didn’t come, because without knowing you, I judged you. I judged you wrongly for who you are and what you would teach. And I am sorry.” 💗

This woman was so brave. I hugged her and wept. She reminded me how unfair it is to judge anyone. We do not know what others have been through, why they do the things they do, or where they are on their path of life. We so often assume the worst in others, instead of allowing them to share their story. 💗
May we all remember today, to give others the benefit of the doubt. Love them even when we don’t understand them. Our place is not to judge others, but to LOVE others. 💗

Your menstrual cycle changes more than just your mood- it can change your body’s fuel utilization & workout capacity 💪🏼

❗️Note the photo above is GENERALIZING based on current literature. Not every female notices a dip in energy with workouts during the Luteal Phase. Some studies have shown NO change in strength or performance between phases & we don’t know yet the impact on eating based on your cycle phase for enhancing weight loss or muscle gain efforts.

So what does this mean for YOU? .
1. If you notice a huge difference in strength throughout your cycle- plan deloads or low intensity training weeks during your luteal phase & rev up your hardcore self during your follicular.
2. Use this knowledge to be kinder to yourself. Lower in energy or not hitting the weights as hard pre period week? Don’t beat yourself up (but also don’t be a baby🤣). Do what you can!
3. IMO- though fuel utilization may be different between phases- what matters most is macro consistency if you track. We don’t know the amount of benefit you’ll get by switching your fat to carb ratio just for those two weeks🤷🏻‍♀️ I DO believe that the luteal phase is a great opportunity to throw in more refeeds and higher calorie days- esp to help combat cravings. .
❓What about if you’re on birth control? ❓

In this case, for the most part your levels of hormones are going to be almost stagnant based on the synthetic estrogen or progestins within the BC (minus the placebo pill weeks). The effect on your recovery, metabolism, & strength will be different based on type of BC. Some show to help increase performance, while others decrease. Women taking the placebo pills can still get PMS and mood swings/fatigue due to drops in the synthetic hormones - aka they may still benefit from more calming & less intense activity during those days.

Roasted acorn squash stuffed with my fav fall mixture (ground turkey, apples, spinach) spiced with cinnamon, sage, and garlic! Topped with goat cheese (optional).

Squashes are a staple in our house this time of year. They are cheap, in season , and easily made in so many different ways! With most squashes, cut in half and roast at 400 for about 30 minutes then scoop out the seeds. Easy peasy, filling, and rich in vitamins A, C, E, and B!

So these are my results from the 2 rounds of one of my fav programs!
Obviously my waist hasn’t shrunk in fact it’s less toned than before. Am I mad? Not really. I knew my abs would be less visible during this bulk faze.
My hormones haven’t helped much in that area tho.🤷🏻‍♀️
However, I can see changes! My back is looking awesome, my legs are getting THICK and my booty is poppin! 💪🏼🦵🏼🍑

Obsessively eating veggies, nuts and seeds to replace all the foods I cut out messed up my gut and left me super inflamed.

My temps were low, my pulse was low, blood sugar was whack, inflammation was high and my metabolism and hormones were trashed.

If your nutrition is getting you no where fast, it’s ok to experiment, do research and figure out what’s best for your body.

My “diet” is now metabolically supportive and looks like:
🖤Getting proteins from a variety of high quality eggs, dairy, meats, broth, gelatin/collagen, fish and shellfish
🖤Getting sugars/carbs from easy to digest fruits, fruit juice, honey, maple syrup, squashes and root veggies- always keeping it balanced with enough protein.
🖤Getting my fats from things like high quality butter, coconut oil and chocolate
🖤Not really digging super fibrous veggies like cruciferous or raw leafy and opting for things like mushrooms and bell peppers
🖤Eating occasional grains that are well prepared, like sourdough or sprouted oats

Have been here today all day and I do not feel bad about it! It was cold, rainy, and grey! Felt like winter (to me) .. and just like that The first day of our period is intense!!!!!!! Our menstruation is compared to winter - if we talk about 4 phases/seasons. During winter we stay in, cozy, have some warm drinks, eat comfort food. We recharge so when spring comes we are ready to be out and happy! If you can, of course, slow dow during your period because that will dictate how your “spring” will be.

What is up with THAT? .
Estrogen has been shown to have an appetite-suppressive effect in the brain.  It appears to act very similarly to the hormone leptin – our hunger-suppressing hormone which functions to tell our brains we’re full 👌
.
In the first 2 weeks of your cycle, estrogen levels are on the rise, so this appetite-suppressive effect may be in action.  The reason you might notice feeling more ravenous right before /at the beginning of your period can at least in part be due to the drop-off in estrogen at this point – and its appetite suppressive effect 🙄
.
So what can you do about this?  Try to make good choices!  Including lots of healthy fats, fibre and protein help keep us feeling full and satisfied (and fight cravings!).

As daylight dwindles, our brain senses this and increases the production of melatonin, the main hormone that helps us fall and stay asleep. 💤⠀

When we’re constantly exposed to bright and blue-light dominant bulbs and electronics in the evening and at night, our brains can become very confused - is it day or night? This can have a significant impact on your circadian rhythm, or internal clock. 😳⠀

These lightbulbs by @healthelighting block most of the blue light regular LEDs emit, and by doing so, support instead of suppress melatonin production. ⠀

Day 127🥩 Dinner 8PM. Wild salmon, sticky crispy beef shin and ribs morsels, some pig trotter meat and raw egg yolk. My appetite has definitely gone down comparing with the first 2-3 months. I also seem to crave less fat than I did before. Although I'm sometimes a bit hungry between meals or late at night. Still playing around with fat/protein  ratios and different meats but most of all I'm following my body cues and try to eat intuitively. It's working great so far.

Self-acceptance and body appreciation has been a huge struggle of mine lately. Nope - not afraid to admit it anymore. I think that self acceptance and even self-love are vastly overlooked on our healing journey. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We can do all the "right" things with our diet, exercise, & sleep, but if we aren't loving ourselves, it could be hindering healing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Yesterday, I got really down about the way my body looks... so much that it spiraled me into a really negative headspace for literally the rest of the night. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But this morning I woke up feeling refreshed and renewed, ready to tackle this part of my own healing journey. For so long, I have been way too focused on the way my body looks, which I now realize is one of the least interesting thing about me. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In an effort to combat the body shame, I spent a lot of time this morning journaling, meditating, yoga, and focusing on what healing means to me.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I've been spending a LOT of time appreciating the things my body is and does.  I'm grateful for my strength, that I have the ability to exercise and eat healthy foods, that I'm not on any medications and have no debilitating chronic conditions.  That I have energy and a passion to share with the world.

If you are always stressed and in chronic flight or flight mode, the body isn’t going to focus on reproducing🙅🏻‍♀️ The body can not tell the difference between stressors. Stress is stress! This chronic state of stress can be a KEY reason your hormone, thyroid, & digestion are off and imbalanced!! .
The body perceives stress and responds by activating the SNS (sympathetic nervous system). Basically- it senses a tiger running at it. What does the body do in chronic stress❓
.
-Increases cortisol levels (when if chronically elevated can cause plummets)- cue blood sugar swings & crashes, anxiety, depression, insulin resistance, trouble gaining or losing weight, decreased thyroid hormone conversion from inactive to active thyroid hormone)
-Decreases sex hormone creation- many times for women progesterone is the first to start plummeting. Without proper progesterone, you can’t ovulate and can either lose your menstrual cycle, have it can late or early, or have spotting. Progesterone is required for building the uterine lining that is shed during your cycle. Lack of progesterone- lack of the building- lack of the shedding! (Estrogen and testosterone can decrease as well!)
-Decreases in thyroid hormone- May be directly related to the stress effects on cortisol and the adrenals or hormones- as this is ALL connected via the HPA axis - hypothalamic pituitary axis
-Increases inflammation- this leads to all the above! Plus slowed digestion, decrease in combatting free radicals, increased risk for autoimmune disease triggers & infections.

Please don’t waste your money on hormone boosting supplements. If you are undereating or overstressed- you have to fix THE ROOT ISSUE! Because the hormone supplements won’t work unless the actual root cause is addressed☝🏼☝🏼☝🏼

What comes to mind when you think of calcium?  You may be thinking strong bones right?  Yes it is true that calcium is good for healthy bones and even our teeth but did you know that just because we might be getting calcium from our diet or even supplements doesn’t automatically mean it is going into our bones and teeth?

Calcium can actually deposit into soft tissues where it isn’t supposed to be.  Places like our joints, kidneys, and even our heart. Yikes.  Calcium can inhibit thyroid hormone which can cause the thyroid to slow down.  It controls the nervous system and helps support secretion of insulin.  It plays a role in maintaining our pH balance.

This is a HTMA from a client of mine that is experiencing fatigue, constipation, depression and fibromyalgia.  After we got this test back it is no wonder she is dealing with these symptoms.  Just look at that calcium.  It is over 9 times what I want to see it at.  Since hair is a soft tissue a high calcium here is a sign it is going into the wrong places and her bones might be missing out.

What can cause high calcium like this in soft tissue?  Things like metal toxicity, mineral deficiencies, emotional trauma, and supplements to name a few.

You may experience things like joint or muscle pain, cramps or spasms (because calcium also controls muscle contractions), osteoporosis (yes this is why taking high doses of calcium to support bones isn’t a good idea because it may not even be going into the bone), heart disease, kidney stones, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, tooth decay, and so much more!

There can be many emotional aspects of calcium too like feeling disconnected, emotionally numb, depression, brain fog, anxiety, irritability, anger all because of how calcium helps with your nervous systems.  Remember my client has depression so it all makes sense!

I can’t give specific recommendations how to to fix this because it would depend on the individual.  You would want to look at all your minerals.  Consider things like vitamin K2, iodine, magnesium, sodium and potassium.  The only way to know your levels is to do a HTMA test (I run them with all my clients). No one size fits all.

I wish you could have met me over a year ago — still eating fast food a couple times a week — drinking excessively every weekend — eating meat — going to the gym but, because I felt gross about my body — straight up hardly never eating fruits and veggies — needless to say I was brought to a cross road, do I make changes or do I keep suffering? ⁣

This was not easy. I won’t sit here and say it happened over night because frankly this is an everyday thing. ⁣
⁣
I’ve always been lean and so I guess from the outside people assumed I was healthy — truly though I was screaming from the inside. ⁣
⁣
Today: I choose everyday to nourish my body, consuming a diet with over 80% fruits and veggies — I was trying to do a year of sobriety but, you know me I’ll always be transparent. I’ve had two occasions when I’ve drank (no excuses) but, it’s very seldom I do it now and if I do, it’s only a little — I haven’t consumed meat in almost 10 months and have no intention of every going back — I still go to the gym but, I do it from a place of love and only go 3 to 4 times a week, allowing my body to have tons of time to rest. ⁣

It’s up to YOU. ⁣
⁣
No one can make choices for you. That’s the power you have everyday. To consciously make a choice for yourself, for your health, your wellbeing. ⁣

Despite its many apparent advantages, the pill has become a band-aid solution for female hormone issues. The reason being, most doctors aren’t trained or educated in ways to treat the underlying root cause of these hormonal issues. 
I’m not doctor bashing or pill bashing. For a doctor to consider themselves an integrated doctor there is a mountain of extra study that they are required to do on top of what’s already been a huge workload. Although there are many avenues available for doctors to now research integrated practices for healing female hormone issues the fact remains that some simply aren’t interested nor have the time. And at their very heart, doctors want to help, but they simply don’t have the training & the Pill is often their only available resource.

Every underlying hormonal issue will have a root cause. This may be physiological, gut related, genetic, environmental, energetic, spiritual, past-life, or trauma related. What I know for certain is that using synthetic hormones to mask your symptoms will ensure that those symptoms at some point in your life will resurface and need addressing. 
Give yourself the act of self love now, have the courage to face what may be causing your symptoms & be brave enough to tackle them. The energy at this time in history with the feminine rising will support you!

If you are always stressed and in chronic flight or flight mode, the body isn’t going to focus on reproducing🙅🏻‍♀️ The body can not tell the difference between stressors. Stress is stress! This chronic state of stress can be a KEY reason your hormone, thyroid, & digestion are off and imbalanced!! .
The body perceives stress and responds by activating the SNS (sympathetic nervous system). Basically- it senses a tiger running at it. What does the body do in chronic stress❓

-Increases cortisol levels (when if chronically elevated can cause plummets)- cue blood sugar swings & crashes, anxiety, depression, insulin resistance, trouble gaining or losing weight, decreased thyroid hormone conversion from inactive to active thyroid hormone)
-Decreases sex hormone creation- many times for women progesterone is the first to start plummeting. Without proper progesterone, you can’t ovulate and can either lose your menstrual cycle, have it can late or early, or have spotting. Progesterone is required for building the uterine lining that is shed during your cycle. Lack of progesterone- lack of the building- lack of the shedding! (Estrogen and testosterone can decrease as well!)
-Decreases in thyroid hormone- May be directly related to the stress effects on cortisol and the adrenals or hormones- as this is ALL connected via the HPA axis - hypothalamic pituitary axis
-Increases inflammation- this leads to all the above! Plus slowed digestion, decrease in combatting free radicals, increased risk for autoimmune disease triggers & infections.

Please don’t waste your money on hormone boosting supplements. If you are undereating or overstressed- you have to fix THE ROOT ISSUE! Because the hormone supplements won’t work unless the actual root cause is addressed☝🏼☝🏼☝🏼
