I talk a lot about why strength matters for fat loss - it will improve your physique, add lean muscle, and prepare you best to workout at a high intensity without incurring an injury or burning out.⁣

On the left we have Cardio Cathy. Lots of cardio, A little lifting. The lifting is very high rep, bootcamp-style classes that don’t allow for progressions and are focused on how many calories you burn and feeling like you’re dying at the end.⁣

You don’t have to workout that way. Very challenging, intense workouts have their place. But strength should be a focus most of the time.⁣

On the right is a process through which I will take most of my clients. We go through a learning phase - focusing on moderate weights, learning new exercises, teaching the nervous system to turn on the right muscles, and using proper form. Progressing in weight during this phase is important, but not at as important as learning and form.⁣
⁣
Phase 2 involves an intense focus on strength. Intensity increases, and the goal is to get stronger. Like, A LOT stronger. Strength will tie into every other facet of fitness - including muscle gain, injury prevention, flexibility, coordination, stability - and most definitely fat loss.⁣
⁣
Phase 3 focuses on fat loss - with moderate weights and higher reps. Now you’re stronger, more stable and able to lift much heavier even in higher rep ranges. The heavier weight you can lift, the more calories you burn, the more fat you burn, the more muscle you gain, the more intense your workout, you get the picture. ⁣
⁣
You don’t get that from focusing on cardio and chasing the “I’m sweaty and dying” bootcamp/metcon style classes.⁣

I’ve mentioned this before, but the muscles on our backside need MORE direct attention than the ones on your front.
-
In theory, we’d work both frontside muscles (chest, anterior delts, quads) the same amount as those on our backside (lats, rhomboids, posterior delts, glutes, hamstrings)....
-
But that assumes we work them equally outside the gym too (hint: we don’t!)
-
That’s why I make an extra effort to add more volume to my backside exercises.
-
When I first started lifting, I dug myself into a bit of a hole by doing mostly chest focused exercises because I thought they were more “sexy”.
-
But the function that rows, chin-ups, pulldowns, and deadlifts offer is critical!
-
Not only do lat exercises improve your strength on lat-focused exercises, but they improve strength on the other side of your body as well!

Left; mid May 14 days out heading to NABBA GB and right two days ago (14 days out) heading to NABBA Universe. I am 0.5kg heavier on the right, bigger and leaner, go figure 🤷🏻‍♀️ I have never had striations in my glutes so I am super happy and can now happily say I am in the process of growing the legs and glutes I aimed to 🙌🏻 in the same way as it was my aim to step on the Universe stage and that I am in 12 days time! And is it even possible for me to grow more muscle in my back?... apparently so because I have!! 🤷🏻‍♀️

A woman wants to lose 15 lbs. What she really wants, is to BE 15 lbs. lighter, and forever too. To be her, but the 2.0 version, for life, not just taking a quick detour and then going back to her original heavier self.⁣⁣

No, she wants to BE her, 15 lbs. lighter, because 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵is a more authentic representation of who she actually is on the inside radiating out. This is the level of lightness she believes she is meant to walk the planet with.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
So. She goes about creating a plan to lose the weight, and then she starts DOING the plan.But she makes one grave mistake. Caught up in the DOING, she pays no attention to the INTENTION behind each action step.

Let’s check out her head space. “I am doing this exercise because…” “I am eating this food because…”⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The answers to these questions are literally EVERYTHING in the determination of whether she gets to STAY 15 lbs. lighter for the rest of her life or not.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
She may say: “I am going to DO this workout because I’m a fatso who let my laziness get out of control. Now I must pay.”⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Or: “I better stick to eating healthy, because if I don’t lose this weight, I will never be beautiful. No one will ever find me attractive. So I need eat perfect.”⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Her body recognizes the fear and pain behind this inner dialogue. And since the body’s #1 priority is to keep you alive, it finds a way by any means necessary to protect you from the thing that is bringing you pain. Which in this case YOU (no one else, own this) have created in your psyche that BEING a 15 lb. lighter woman AND the DOING (the action steps that go with being fit and light) is pain.⁣⁣

So how do we shift out of this?

One of the biggest fitness/diet myths is that 6 small meals per day is superior for weight loss. The theory is that by eating several small meals spaced out throughout the day, you constantly keep your metabolism going and burn more calories.

This is not correct and what actually matters most when it comes to losing or gaining weight is hitting your overall macros at the end of the day. If you prefer eating smaller, more frequent meals then that’s fine. However, if you prefer eating fewer, larger meals, that is fine as well. There’s nothing special about number of meals or meal frequency.

*HOME WORKOUT*

Here are two movements involving a big portion of the musculoskeletal system. 
Ladies only need one set of 7-12lb dumbbells, depending on strength.

Men 15-25lb is all that is needed.

The goal is to do the movements with resistance, with the movements being the primary focus and the weights secondary. 
Because the weights aren’t heavy, these movements work well when done for time. 
Start with 30 sec and each round increase 10 secs until you can do 75-90 secs nonstop. 6 rounds of each movement is a good workout. The break is kept to 60 secs between rounds.

One of the biggest factors in my clients making consistent progress is they learn quickly that the plan is a template, it’s a starting point, and will change.

Nobody has ever stuck to a plan 100%. Having the ability though to swap things round when needed, make cutbacks before and after higher calorie meals is what turns the screw for most of them.

Want to eat breakfast out on a weekend? Great. Perhaps eat later meaning you have a smaller lunch & don’t need a morning snack. Improvise, adapt & overcome ☝🏻
