I talk a lot about why strength matters for fat loss - it will improve your physique, add lean muscle, and prepare you best to workout at a high intensity without incurring an injury or burning out.⁣

On the left we have Cardio Cathy. Lots of cardio, A little lifting. The lifting is very high rep, bootcamp-style classes that don’t allow for progressions and are focused on how many calories you burn and feeling like you’re dying at the end.⁣
⁣
You don’t have to workout that way. Very challenging, intense workouts have their place. But strength should be a focus most of the time.⁣
⁣
On the right is a process through which I will take most of my clients. We go through a learning phase - focusing on moderate weights, learning new exercises, teaching the nervous system to turn on the right muscles, and using proper form. Progressing in weight during this phase is important, but not at as important as learning and form.⁣
⁣
Phase 2 involves an intense focus on strength. Intensity increases, and the goal is to get stronger. Like, A LOT stronger. Strength will tie into every other facet of fitness - including muscle gain, injury prevention, flexibility, coordination, stability - and most definitely fat loss.⁣
⁣
Phase 3 focuses on fat loss - with moderate weights and higher reps. Now you’re stronger, more stable and able to lift much heavier even in higher rep ranges. The heavier weight you can lift, the more calories you burn, the more fat you burn, the more muscle you gain, the more intense your workout, you get the picture. ⁣
⁣
You don’t get that from focusing on cardio and chasing the “I’m sweaty and dying” bootcamp/metcon style classes.⁣

It’s been a while!!! #transformationtuesday But I was motivated to post this just after having a conversation about set backs, not giving up, remembering where you are/were and where you NEED to be. It’s not all victories. I’ve had set backs. I’ve had moments of weakness. I’ve eaten the few Oreos and felt like crap after. I’m still in between 194 and 199 lbs daily. I want to drop another 10 lbs but I am happy with this phase of the journey. Does it get old? It can. I can see where I have lost just a tad bit of definition because I slacked off. That’s nothing that two weeks religiously in the gym wouldn’t fix. Not two years. Do I want to look like what I did a short 16 months ago? Hell no!!! Gotta keep pushing. What an amazing watch (currently on Netflix). More and more My diet has become plant based (I only eat chicken and eggs now...but eventually that might fall off to completely vegan/vegetarian). If anything this documentary is some serious food for thought (pun intended).

Did you have a bad weekend with your diet? Did that one slice of pizza turn into a pie? Did that small cheat meal turn into a cheat day? Trust me, you’re not alone. The weekends are typically the most difficult times to stick to a diet since you’re likely hanging out with friends and going out where it’s tougher to track macros.

While it might be easy to call it quits after a few bad days, when you look at the big picture, a few bad days is nothing compared to a week, several weeks, or even months of bad eating. If you had a bad weekend, look at it as a small step backwards and get back on track starting today before it spirals out of control. Otherwise, you’ll look back on today and realize you really didn’t do much damage at all and if you had just gotten back on track after the weekend, you would have been perfectly fine.

Pause and take some time if you hit a sore spot.

Roll every side of your quads/upper leg.
.
Sit on it and get your glutes.
.
Roll out your calves. Fronts, back, sides.
.
Roll on your back. Hug yourself and roll your upper back. Put the other arm on top and roll your upper back.

Turn on your side. Roll out your lats and all the way to your shoulder. There will be a tender spot up there. Spend some time there.
.
Roll on your belly. Roll out your pecs. And get the edge of the roller in on one side of your groin. It should be tender a bit.

Now you’re done. This has great benefits for sleep as well!

A strong core is absolutely everything in my opinion. Way too often, people focus and prioritize on the wrong thing in the gym which is get strong and jacked as hell by lifting heavy loads and slamming the weights. Now that's great and I agree, lifting heavy is awesome, but the priority for all gym goers should be a strong core for both performance reasons and health reasons. So before you start lifting heavy, let's ensure you can do so safely and reap the benefits of the heavy loads. Here is why you need a strong core:
.
👉You can lift heavier: when you have sa strong core and your spinal column and body is stabilized, you reduce energy leaks in the kinetic chain meaning. This leads to stronger, more powerful contractions of the muscles required to lift the load and reduces compensation from other muscles, usually synergistic muscles.
👉Reduce the likelihood of injury: by ensuring your core is strong, your spine is going to be stabilized throughout everyday activities and through various exercises which reduces stress on the back as well as compensation from other muscles due to poor form which can lead to overuse injuries especially if the muscles that are compensating are not meant to handle heavy loads placed on them.
👉To have a healthy back: one of the biggest problems in our world is lower back injuries and while that is often caused by tight hip flexor a and poor posture, it is also caused by a weak abdominal wall and deep spinal stabilizers.

Don't neglect the core. My favourite core exercises are planks and deadbugs and then progressing to more advanced ones like hanging leg raises and wood choppers and cable crunches and ice cream makers.
