Red clover blossoms are good for you and good for the planet! They can be used for fertility, hot flashes, breast pain or tenderness, PMS, as a nutritive tonic and to cleanse and purify the blood. The blossoms pictured will be dried for @thehomesteadherbalist’s herbal tea blends. They also attract pollinators, act as a cover crop producing ample biomass, fix nitrogen and break up clay soil. What’s not to like? #wildfoodlove #medicinalplants #trifoliumpratense #redclover

Did you know that a honey bee swarm is one of the most brave and vulnerable acts in nature, the healthy expansion of the hive out into the unknown world, scary but essential for growth. I think we can all relate to those challenging yet necessary moves. For World Bee Day this year 🐝🐝🐝 You can help expand The Swarm and raise awareness for the bees too! Purchase your own Swarm bee as a beautiful reminder of the bees in your own home @thegoodofthehive
Every time a bee is sold they are able to create another bee - The Swarm can only continue to expand with your support!🐝🐝🐝 #worldbeeday #thegoodofthehive #theswarm #worldbeedaybuzz

I hope you’re not sick of seeing my garden. I promised myself I’d share more of it on my feed this season, so regularly scheduled indoor-only photos will resume this fall 😁 I love this post-rain view and how those teensy, thin stems manage to reposition themselves nice and tall and strong after a saturating shove to the ground. We can learn so much from flowers, ya know? I mean, they keep it pretty simple: stay beautiful, give back to nature, grow on, don’t compete, and keep your strength. AyyyyyMEN to that. 🙌🏼🌻 .

For the bees, I dive into my box of clay skills and dig out all the tools. I throw the body parts on the wheel, hand build the wings, and sculpt the small pieces. I am ever so grateful for my fingers (they do so much of the work!) along with a few small tools. The bee is one of the most complex forms I make, taking hours and hours to create. Here’s the process trimmed down into 59 seconds! •

Unpacking another golden batch of local beeswax. We passionately source our ingredients from small-batch makers, farmers, herbalists, and bee keepers. Our beautiful, sunshine yellow wax is fresh from our friends at Three Sisters Honey, an apiary located in Puslinch Township, where hives reside in an old meadow, and bees have access to local wild flowers and herbs. Sustainably gathered, organic, antibiotic-free, and dedicated to the protection, appreciation, and promotion of pollinators, and their forest, meadow and wetland ecosystems // We are using this ambrosial wax in our Facial Balm, Rose Salve, and Hand-Dipped Herbal Candles today. Bright blessings at midwinter to all! #imbolc2019

Tiny flower. Big meaning. Maybe 3 years ago or more now, I remember sitting at dinner with a friend and saying that when it came to parenting, the most important thing for us was to raise a kind human. Out of everything, whatever W's future holds, the only thing I hoped for our 'make it up as we go' parenting was for kindness to be at the centre for a lifetime. And then I cried, at dinner, tears falling onto the table. You know when something means so much to you, but you just don't know until you say the words out loud? That's what I was hit with that night.
. . .
✷
Willow cut this flower for me from our tiny garden and told me it was for love and kindness. It hurt my heart but in the most beautiful way. She's no saint and she does all the 'not so fun' standard things that an almost 4 year old does but these moments, they tell me that we humans, we're pretty spectacular and we are born kind. When that kindness is nurtured, it can't help but thrive and thread through our families and communities. We are seeing kindness in action every single day.
. . .
✷
Now kindness and people pleasing can be a fine line to dance, we constantly wrangle with it still. For now, can I encourage you to think about a random act of kindness you might partake in this week? Perhaps a flower under someones windscreen wiper? An anonymous friendly note in a random letter box? Or simply call a friend instead of your usual text message? Can you do it? Will you do it? Kindness in action is a stunning thing x

The yard and vege patch is alive with buzz attracting flowers.. mint, passionfruit, little orchid thing, and sunflowers. Also flowering are corn, tomotos, lime and lemon, bottlebrush and pumpkin and cucumbers. Looks like the Crepe Myrtle is about to bust open too so plenty for the bees to enjoy.

I grew a lot of sunflowers (and took a lot of pictures of said sunflowers) last year!! (A result of over-purchasing on sunflower seeds with the intention of growing a lot more sunflower shoots). I’m growing even more this year. For me, my bee friends, and for human friends. Because how could these not brighten someone’s day?
Also, it’s overcast and hopefully 🙏🏼 a bit rainy this week so I planted out my RED sunflower seedlings yesterday🤗😏 so prepare for more sunflower spam in the coming months ❤️💛 ...Maybe I’ll get some hybrids 🤓 I can’t wait to save ALL the seeds!! .

We have never had more bees 🐝 and ladybirds🐞 in our garden. They absolutely love this fennel we let go to seed. The ladybirds keep the pests away and the bees are doing their job pollinating our eggplants, cucumbers and zucchini.

This #cardoon comes back with gusto every year. I planted a few more last season to get first blooms this year. Artichoke relative that thrives in North Texas (apparently) and produces huge thistle blossoms. I cut half for the house and leave half #forthebees 🐝🌿 Hit @realfinefood and about a dozen posts down in the gallery check out a big purple bloom from the last year. Quick scroll, can’t miss it! 💜

Y’all the chickweed is out of control in some of my beds! 😂 This lil “weed” is a tasty add-in to salads, pesto, soups, and smoothies... but I have more than I can eat this spring! What’s your favorite way to use chickweed?
I raked a lot of dried-up chickweed from my yard last spring, and added it to my compost. From these results, I’d say I don’t think it gets hot enough to kill weed seeds in there!
But at least @apiopoliskeeper says it’s good for the bees. 😉🐝💛🖤

K E E P I N G L A V E N D E R!

Lavender is one of the humans favourite plants, it's such an easy plant to grow and care for, it's beautiful to look at and pleasant to smell - to most anyway - its essential oils are rumoured to have antiseptic and anti inflammatory properties and its aroma has been suggested by research to illeviate anxiety, depression, sleeplessness and restlessness. It's not a wonder we love it so much.

Lavender is a woody perrenial shrub, meaning it dies back to wooody stems after a flowering period and new growth sprouts from these woody stems. Lavenders new growth overlaps the die back so much its hard to notice it does so, but left to its own devices, lavender will become lanky, and its perrenation much more obvious. This is what sparks the rumour that lavender is short lived and will diminish greatly over a few years.

But pruning back lavender just a couple of times a year will rejuvenate the plant on shorter, stouter stems that can support new growth without splaying and exposing their barren insides, extending its life span. I like to think of keeping lavender as sharing with the bees, with a well timed trim lavender can produce each year two bountiful harvests, one for me and one for them - English lavender is really the best for human uses. The first harvest is for me, I trim back as flower buds are just about to bloom, this is when buds are going to be kept the best and hold their colour and aroma the longest it also stimulates the lavender to try again and produce another yeildly bloom, later in the season which I leave for the bees to harvest at a time when other flowers are dying back and going to fruit or seed. I trim these back after the bees have had their fill but before she wastes her energy on ripening seed so she's good to go for the next growing season.

Trimming lavender is much more casual than roses, just make sure to be cutting back to semi hardened wood, and ensure you are both cutting off new growth points and leaving behind a few new growth points to find a happy medium between strengthening old growth and promoting new (Lavendula angustifolia, English lavender, Lamiaceae)

"For the Bees"
I pulled out yellow and black after yesterday's doctor appointment chaos. I don't know why. It most certainly wasn't because of the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania sports teams that my extended family and friends from the area love so much. (I don't do sports fanning, so it's a universal 😝 to me.) So I figured I must have bees on the brain since my brain was buzzing! Bees keep popping up around me. The other day I saw Gilbert Blythe tending his hives on Anne with an E (which I've been savoring because it's the last season 😭), and I recently read an article on how the vast almond fields in California are causing imported from other state bees to die off by the billions. I know so many more sad and scary things are going on in the world right now, but this is currently what I can process on a day such as today. 😶 Just had blood taken and an x-ray done, and it was actually a great experience. Kind and efficient medical workers are just amazing to deal with! 😁 Happy Friday!! #inkart #alcoholink #alcoholinkart #fluidart #artexperimentation #artformentalhealth #artstagram #abstractart #KMbeingallarty #jacquardproducts #pinatainks #upcycledphoto #blackandyellow #forthebees

Lil’ DIY bee hive I made for my sister in az. I’m hoping that some native mason bees find it and lay eggs near her lemon tree during the cold season. When the 🐝babes are born, they’ll be lemon blossom and desert flowers for them to eat. I rolled up cardboard and found red bean pods that have perfectly curled up into little tunnels. Let’s see what happens over the next few months.

Sometimes plants remind you what you do have to offer the world. The magic of watching all the plant babies start to thrive at life and succeed 💚 this little girl is a Mexican sour gherkin my kids could eat these by the bucket and so could I... interested to see if i can make cross pollination happen for some early cucs this year 💪 #womenfarmer #indoorgrowing #indoorplants #mexicansourgherkin #tinyplants #fairymelons #happygrower #happylifeinside #lindsayontario #ontarioflowergrower #ontariomarketgarden #forthebees #dontpanicitsorganic

My favourite thing in the garden at the moment... these utterly ridiculous #chillies. ‘Joe’s long cayenne’ chillies to be exact. We bought it as a @thediggersclub seedling from Bunnings. They’re still getting longer by the day, still producing A LOT of flowers, and the plant is super strong. .

I’ve learnt to love and appreciate heirloom varieties. They usually look better, produce better and are hardier despite going up against the genetically modified, cross bred, hybrid varieties. And they produce food that isn’t your standard off the shelf, same same, standard looking veg. .

If you are thinking about adding to or starting your veggie patch, seriously consider some #heirloom varieties, you won’t regret it 🌶

My favourite thing in the garden at the moment... these utterly ridiculous #chillies . ‘Joe’s long cayenne’ chillies to be exact. We bought it as a @thediggersclub seedling from Bunnings. They’re still getting longer by the day, still producing A LOT of flowers, and the plant is super strong. .

A strong honeybee colony flies the equivalent distance from Earth to the Moon everyday.

The average forage flight of a honeybee is 1-2 miles from the hive, but they can travel as far as 5 miles if the food source is right! With up to 60,000 honeybees in a hive, the colony can easily travel the distance to the moon and back every day during a nectar flow. 🌕🐝 #flybeetothemoon #beefacts #powerofbees #wellbeeings #plantflowers #forthebees .

What can I say. The corn was freaking amazing and I'm already planning how to make it better for next year with the addition of horse 💩💩 broken down to reduce the grass seeds from germinating.
