This little nugget and I made it through our 5th straight shift in a row! She must know that I’m saving up overtime for her arrival! 60 hours since I clocked on Saturday night ✔️ But.. it’s time for a break, we miss daddy.
.
I get so many questions on how I’m handling night shift being in the emergency room pregnant.. Well, every pregnancy is different but this pregnancy has honestly been pretty easy. I was so worried that I was going to get sick and vomit on a patient or be exhausted from running room to room... but, none of that! I prayed and prayed and I still pray for an easy pregnancy and before every shift I pray for Jesus to be beside me to give me the energy and strength to make it through the night.
.
I have noticed some bilateral swelling in my legs and spider 🕷 veins popping up behind my knees.. I have been trying to wear compression stockings more, iso recommendations! My back and ribs are starting to bother me, especially on my right side where baby girl’s head is pushing, praying she flips soon 🙏🏼 Other than that, things are going ok here... trying to push myself and stay active so that I have an easy and uncomplicated labor ❤️

It’s travel assignment numero uno for us! We drove into Pomona, CA on Saturday, our orientation shift is tomorrow night and then we fly solo! We are both working at Children’s Hospital of Orange County in the ED for the next 6 months and could not be more excited for this new experience. The transition has been quick and it will be a lot to learn but there’s nobody I’d rather do it with! Plus we get to wear this interesting maroon/purple color 🙃

Today was my repeat MRI.
•
And I felt SO much better walking into it. I spent the morning relaxing by watching a Netflix movie and assembling the floral centerpieces for the wedding. Kevin & I left around 12:30 to get there for the 2pm appointment. I was scheduled at a different facility - one that I was very familiar with after being there several times for other appointments.
•
I was brought back, told to change into a gown, and laid down on the MRI table for the tech to start my IV. She was SO personable and easy to talk with given my anxiety level of having to do the test again. I explained to her my previous scan didn’t go well and how the techs were kinda rude. She was pretty bummed it happened, but was absolutely incredible for the rest of my scan.
•
I got positioned, she made sure I was comfortable and provided me with music via Pandora. I chose @thepianoguys knowing that would calm my nerves and was something I could relax to. I was able to focus more on taking shallow breaths during scans and deeper breaths in between. The IV contrast dye felt cold (just like last time), but today I felt it going up my right arm and into my clavicle! It was totally bizarre.
•
When the scan was finished, the tech pulled me out and assured me that all the scans she got were good. She also mentioned that the first scan (Friday) looked good too, but it was more of my breathing that deterred the scans performance.
•
I sat up and oriented myself back to sitting up in a normal position. It was totally weird laying down in the position for 20 minutes, but I recovered quickly.
•
I meet with the surgeon tomorrow for the results. I’m nervous, but I’m ready for some answers and relief. Until then, I’ll be finishing up the centerpieces to keep my mind off from it.
•
I’ll leave some MRI tips in the comments in case you have to have a breast MRI or a MRI in general!

Made a big move people. Went from over an hour commute to my ER.. to 10 minutes to my new one 🔟. Change is hard! Especially when it means you are leaving your "work family" & going to make a new one.. Well, it didn't go so bad!! ♥ Took a chance & met some awesome women that actually didn't run away from my crazy self 🤪 😂

✨💜This was me the first week of my new grad program. Little did I know that in just about 6 months that I’d be experiencing my first code where my patient coded. Did my school or new grad program prepare me well for this? Honestly, I learned a lot from every single simulation and dummy I’ve laid my hands on but still nothing and I mean nothing could compare to the feeling of my patient deteriorating in front of me with absolutely no notice. During my first code, I felt frozen in time while my senior nurses and coworkers automatically took on different roles and tasks.. I was in awe. My main job was to recollect what happened until this point and basically made sure every person who walked in understood what had happened. I’d say that was definitely one of my scariest work memories thus far. Thinking back now I’ve had quite a few crazy nights where my patients randomly take turns for the worst with no warning whatsoever. A couple simple take home points that these experiences in the ICU drilled into my head are:⁣⁣
⁣⁣
⚠️ BP tanked? First, is your arterial line leveled? Is the waveform reasonable? Is your pressure bag empty (lol)? Is your BP cuff tight enough? RE-TAKE the BP. If it’s still low, AND you’re on continuous dialysis (common in the ICU), turn down the ultrafiltration to 0 (amount of fluids you’re pulling from the patient!). If you’re on pressors, titrate up. While you’re doing all this grab a second, more senior nurse stat to help you out!⁣⁣
⁣⁣
⚠️ Desatting? The alarm 🚨 that sounds when your o2 sats fall to 80s... then 70s.. and even 60s and below is very disheartening. Especially when the waveform looks decent. If the pulse ox is on correctly, increase o2 stat/call RT/tell someone to get RT.. Does your patient need to be suctioned? If they sound wet, then suction asap. LOOK at the patient! Are they struggling? Grab a second nurse ASAP and make sure your bag valve mask is handy and hooked to the o2 on the highest setting (you should always make sure this is hooked up and ready to go at the beginning of q shift) in case you need to bag.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
⚠️ is there a pulse? If full code (make sure you know your patients code!), start CPR, and call for help!!⭐️💉

13 months about 10kg and loads of centimeters lost. What I have gained though has been priceless 💛. Embarking on this journey I discovered I absolutely LOVE hitting the gym for a good weights session. It’s my ME time. I get to think, breathe and slow everything down 🙏🏼. The old me on the left used to do cardio upon cardio not realizing it was actually stressing my body rather than putting it into a fat burning state like I thought it would 🤷‍♀️. Working as a nurse in a busy emergency department it’s go go go pretty much all the time! The last thing I needed was more adrenaline and cortisol flooding my already stressed and fatigued system 😞.
So now I lift weights and I LOVE it.
I put my earphones in and away I go.
What sort of exercise do you like to do? .

Both @deanshackley & @andrewheimbiz have pacemakers.⁣
In fact they have the exact same heart condition that 1/50,000 people are born with. ⁣
Both own a business.⁣
Both families are from KC.⁣
Yet met in Rochester, MN at the Mayo Clinic 🤯⁣
⁣
I don’t believe in coincidence... God totally knew what He was doing. He placed @andrewheimbiz & @laurenheimstudio in our lives at the perfect time. Andrew already has a artificial valve - the same kind that Dean will get. So it was comforting knowing that Andrew has new types of testing to do now AND still lives life to the fullest!!!!! ⁣
⁣
Andrew is a host of a podcast called “The Business Life Podcast” and he interviewed Dean which is now live on the podcast effective this week! If you’re interested & want to listen in - just drop your fav emoji and I’ll hook you up!

I knew from a younish age (freshman year of high school) what I wanted to be when I grew up. I was in love with CSI and hadn't missed an episode. I know, TV isn't real life but it was cool ok? One of the classes that was offered in my HS was forensics and obvi I signed up to take it. I LOVED it! I loved it so much that I actually went back my end of junior and my senior years to student aid in this class AND went on to my college as a forensic science major.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To make a long story short, I changed my major after my freshman year of college due to not seeing eye to eye with one of my professors and learning all about the laws in the state I was in (while I absolutely knew I didn't want to stay there after graduation). I finished with a degree in biology because it would still allow me to work in a crime lab.....with experience. I didn't have any of that....
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It took some time but I went on again to get my degree in nursing and have been there ever since. This has been an amazing fit for me! I love being able to help people on, what could possibly be their worst days of their lives.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I also am a fitness and lifestyle coach and work from home, in my leggings or my pjs. This allows me to connect with people on a different level and hopefully prevent them from meeting me in the hospital. Although I absolutely love both jobs, coaching has given me the ability to quit my 2 extra nursing jobs to prevent burn out. It has given me that extra income so I can focus on myself and my wellbeing and be at top performance what I am at the hospital.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Many people don't understand why I would go through so much schooling and work from home as a fitness coach, imply it was a waste of an education or a waste of money. To me, I look at it as an amazing compliment to my current nursing career. It keeps me sane, keeps me centered, keeps me honest and allows me to appreciate my career more instead of dreading going in for 60 hours a week and burning out just to put food on the table.

Working hard or hardly working? Haha we work super hard but we all need that work buddy to keep us sane in the workplace! I honestly think I have the best coworkers ever. They help me unconditionally and I have never once felt that I am ever on my own in any situation. ⁣
⁣
This week, I had two patients that were pretty far apart and one was in an iso room.. to my surprise, my coworker had passed my first set of meds and did my accuchek for my other patient while I was in the iso room😭I was grateful beyond words.. This helped me not fall behind. Do you have coworkers you’re grateful for?🦃🦃🙌🏼🙏🏼✨

This helped me not fall behind. Do you have coworkers you’re grateful for?🦃🦃🙌🏼🙏🏼✨

Work sent me to the #stacs2019 and my aunt also went for her work. So she was stuck with me for two days 🤪 #level1 #ednurse #traumaicunurse

Well here it is!
My new logo for The Healthy Happy Nurse. After 21 years of nursing and years of personal carer work before that I’m giving back to my fellow nurses!!
This job has been THE most rewarding, diverse, challenging, heart warming, and heart wrenching journey for me. I’ve grown in so many ways but I also became lost along the way too.
Countless tears, there have been laughs too, frustration, fear, aching back, sore feet, full bladder and that hangry feeling when you and your colleagues don’t get a break because you are all ran off your feet!
And then there’s the fact that can’t unsee some things, and as much as you try sometimes you can’t change an outcome..... Yep I got lost in all that and I fell into a deep dark place. I was too busy caring for my patients, my family and friendships that I forgot to take care of me 😞. After finding my way out of the darkness I’m on a mission now to help nurses from that place of overwhelm and stress. If I can do it, you can too. And I’ll be here to hold your hand ALL the way 💛

Even when I only get to stop in and hold him for a few minutes! The amazing feeling I get holding my precious Godson is unlike any other. He just makes all my crap melt away and I feel so much love! What else makes you feel as good as holding a tiny bundle of joy?! 😍❤😍

MRI Day
•
I was nervous ALL week long for it, especially up until last night. I ended up going to the gym for nearly 2 hours last night to burn off some steam. It helped a little bit.
•
This morning, Kevin & I woke up at 5:30a to leave the house by 6a for my 9:45a appointment. The MRI center I went to was roughly 2 hours south of where we live, and wanted to avoid rush hour traffic so we left early and decided to eat breakfast at a nearby diner.
•
Once we left the restaurant, I took the first 0.5mg of Ativan prescribed by my doctor (as directed) an hour before the test. I ended up taking the final 0.5mg 30 minutes prior because my nerves were going haywire; I needed the medicinal coverage.
•
The tech brought me back to a room to change into a gown. Everything from the waist up. After, she directed me to another room where she started an IV for the contrast portion of the exam. It was only a minute long, but then she asked me to wait either in the room or the changing room while they set up the machine. Ultimately, I chose to sit in the changing room with Kevin, who calmed my nerves down a bit more.
•
5 minutes later, I was ushered into the MRI room. The tech handed me earplugs and a mesh hair cap, asked me to get onto the table, and allow my breasts to dangle in the ‘coils’. The other one stuck a sticker on my left breast indicating the previous surgery I had on it for the radiologist to read. They made sure I was as comfortable as could be before pushing me into the machine. At this point, I kinda freaked out because I was informed by one of the phone receptionists that I could listen to music. Unfortunately, the machine I was in was not compatible for that. Instead, they gave me ear muffs to assist with the loud noises. I was covered with a blanket and pushed in.
•
I was face down the entire time and my arms above my head. My right arm had the IV and tubing wrapped around my thumb. The left hand had the “stop” button.

The winter holidays are practically here and, for me, that means plenty of time spent agonizing about making the holidays magical for my family: special meals, parties, gifts, shopping, activities, keeping house clean enough to welcome friends and neighbors, wondering if this gift is too large or to small, am I doing enough or too much, will they even feel appreciated?!… Can you relate? Are you ready for this madness?!⁣
⁣
But hey, adults, what do you really want? I want to wake up Christmas morning feeling rested and content. I want to enjoy this season of giving. I want time. I want to play and laugh with my kids. I want to give myself the gift of loving-kindness. For me, that means moving my body every day in whatever way feels fortifying. Healthy food. Enough sleep. ⁣
⁣
I know this sounds like a tall order at this time of year. Are you up for a challenge? I’m making the commitment now to give myself a healthy, blessed, and joyful holiday season. I’m not too shy to say that I will need support! ⁣
⁣
We have an online accountability group starting December 2! ⁣
We will help each other stick to our winter-season goals, whatever they may be. ⁣
Mine are:⁣
30 minutes of exercise daily⁣
Plenty of vegetables with each meal⁣
8 glasses of water/day⁣
Sleep when I am tired⁣
⁣
Interested? Talk to me about your goals and let’s help each other make holiday magic without losing our minds. I consider it an honor to be your health and fitness coach!⁣

Once the hair lets down and the socks come off it’s game over, I am officially in 🐻 mode. Coming home to a comfortable and clean, cozy home is what I look forward to most after each long shift. Goodnight 💤✌🏼.. it’s “me” time 😻🙌🏼🧖🏼‍♀️.. (after I throw the week’s scrubs in the washer) 😴 ft. Eye bags n tyeed eyez

Working today on workshopping how to close the feedback loop between casual nurses and hospitals with the amazing Jocie.

So nurses ... if you could give feedback to a hospital that you've just done a casual / agency shift at, what would your feedback be about?

I preach self-care a Lot. A huge lot. I think as a mom, nurse, human!, it's pretty important. And pretty easy to neglect. Caregivers feel selfish if they care for themselves and tend to push it off. ⚕
This gig ain't easy sometimes. It's easy to feel guilty for saying no to that extra shift. Or leaving your kids at home so you can to the gym by yourself, or out to dinner with your s.o. (just kidding. I rarely allow guilt on margarita night.😂😂)🍹
Let yourself relax and chill when you need it!!
⚕
Happy nursing everyone!!😘😘

What’s new.. I graduated RN residency!! 😭 thanks for sticking with me through this past year. It was a really tough year as I prayed and still do before each and every shift, caring for some of the sickest patients I’ve ever seen. At the same time I still spent time with the hospital volunteer program, as a way of giving back. I remember how much volunteering exposed me to this profession in its rawest form. I originally intended to update this page a lot more with posts throughout the past year but tbh sometimes the struggle got so real that I couldn’t get to it. I’m thinking of updating it more now on my second year of working, feel free to dm me with suggestions on what to post or what you’d like to see! :) When I’m not at work, I’m either sleeping or furnishing my place or usually trying to have somewhat of a social life.. probably mostly sleeping though. Or I try to do things that relieve stress such as volunteering at the local animal shelter with my unit during #uclavolunteerday (second photo)🐶🥰
