Tragically, in today's society, running around like a chicken with our heads cut off is the norm. We live in a world where busy-ness is glorified and stress equals success. As my girl @dr.carriejones said in a post on stress yesterday, there is no award for being the busiest! 👊🏽 What’s worse is, since we've learned to "adapt," most of us don't even realize how much tension our bodies are being met with day after day by seemingly small things.⁠

Traffic jams, blue light exposure, family drama, low self-esteem, excess caffeine, processed foods... I could go on forever.⁠

Even our coping mechanisms are potential stressors! The two glasses of wine you had last night,🍷for example (sorry, don’t shoot the messenger), or how about the intense spin class you took at 5am in lieu of an extra hour of shut-eye? 🚴🏻‍♀️ Yep, our bodies consider that stress, too. Let's face it: We aren't running from lions anymore, but with the constant over-stimulation on a day-to-day basis, we might as well be.⁠

To make matters worse, women’s bodies in particular are highly susceptible to the stressors of modern life, and this is where we start seeing hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis or adrenal dysfunction arise. And I'm sure you can guess what part of our biology takes the hardest hit...⁠

This post is a little “sciency”, and I realize some of you don’t care about the science behind health and fitness 🤓. Just get me lean, dude 🙄.

However, I often I find myself explaining metabolism and hormones to clients as well as on social media.

This is NOT an exhaustive list of hormones NOR is it a complete description of the roles and effects of these hormones. I simply included the most important roles and effects of hormones I consider most relative to fitness and metabolism.

I hope this opens your eyes a bit to the effects of some hormones often demonized like insulin. Most people associate insulin with fat storage - which it does. But it also helps store glycogen in your muscle to help fuel workouts as well as uptake amino acids and proteins into muscle. These are incredibly important roles for muscle building and raising or maintaining metabolism.

Cortisol is a stress hormone, and increases as your stress levels increase - from life, dieting, overreaching, to name a few. Cortisol will break down muscle and use proteins for energy.

Growth hormone mobilizes fats for energy, and growth hormone release is maximized with proper sleep (7-9 hours).

Do you know how your VERY FIRST morning cortisol response plays into your autoimmune symptoms? Turns out, your spike in cortisol is critical for killing the cells tagged as autoimmune in your Thymus gland. 🤭

It’s your ‘glucocorticoid induced apoptosis of the thymus’ if you’re being more technical. 🤓
.
I first learned about this from one of my favorite professors from medical school and the Dean of Research and Graduate Studies, @hzwickey . 🙌🏼

This has been a huge AH-HA for me, autoimmune and the HPA axis. 🤓
.
When your body makes immune cells, it first checks them to make sure they aren’t autoimmune to you already in your Thymus gland. 🤨
.
This is central tolerance. 👀
.
The bad cells that failed the test are tagged to be killed. This process is induced by the CAR (morning cortisol rise). If your cortisol flatlines or goes down in the morning, then those cells don’t necessarily get destroyed and instead slip out into circulation to cause or worsen autoimmune! 😕
.
Sneaky bastards. 🤬

How are your autoimmune symptoms in the morning? How is your energy in the morning? Specifically in the first 30-60 minutes of opening your eyes? 🤭
.
Talk with your practitioner and test! Know your CAR with @dutchtest and if your are flat or low, then at least start your day with sunshine or full spectrum light exposure immediately on waking to jump start your CAR! 🤗

ANXIETY – PHYSICAL ROOT CAUSES + WHAT TO DO 🌻

A lot of times with anxiety we think of it as mental / emotional and that certainly can be the case, but there are also many reasons on the physical level in our bodies that can be impacting anxiety as well that we don’t talk about as often.

Nutrient deficiencies can contribute to anxiety. Nutrients = vitamins, minerals, amino acids (from protein), fatty acids (from fats), carbohydrates. There are certain nutrients that are absolutely crucial for mood and cognitive function and if we’re not getting them then anxiety can result as a SYMPTOM.

We get nutrients from food and if we’re not including foods that support our bodies with adequate nutrients then we can be low or deficient. But more goes into this than just what we’re eating (or not eating). Stress can burn through nutrients (specifically B vitamins), medications can use up more of specific nutrients (to check your medications and possible nutrient depletions go to mytavin.com), if we have poor gut health we may not be absorbing nutrients as well, our genetics can impact our natural detoxification pathways which can affect nutrient levels, and drugs & alcohol can impact our nutrients as well.

I’ve listed which nutrients have the most impact on our mood and anxiety. If we are deficient or low in ANY of these anxiety can be a symptom.

There are certain lab tests to identify what’s going on in your body. I commonly use DUTCH hormone testing and GI-MAP gut health test in my practice which can give us a good picture of what is going on. DUTCH test includes some vitamin and mood chemical markers in addition to hormones. I’ll often recommend getting iron (ferritin) and vitamin D checked with your doctor. Organic acids can give us info about our vitamin and mineral levels in the body. If we have certain variation of the MTHFR or COMT genes, it can affect nutrient needs and may indicate a greater need or a specific form of vitamins that play a role in mood and anxiety.

This is long but worth the read if you’re a female struggling to reach goals in life or just plain confused....I just finished up a coaching call with a client and she said, “Sarah, just curious, how did you get your waist so small?”

I said, girlfriend...the magic P word-PATIENCE. When I first started my career as a registered dietitian, I was about 70 pounds overweight and had just had my first child. I was stressed and driving an hour and a half to work in management as a brand new dietitian. I was feeding my family through a drive-through and I was not making time for myself. I was using the “busy” excuse and in reality, I needed to take control of my situation, my health and my body. .

It took me an entire year to lose that weight through all of the things I currently teach my clients. I really didn’t know it but I was building my coaching program back then through my own efforts.

Your struggles are my struggles. I can guarantee you there’s nothing I have not been through that you’re currently dealing with. This is why I relate to my clients.

But let me go ahead and drop some 💣 here on what I feel like has consistently allowed me to have a positive body image despite the number on the scale and reprogram my brain to be satisfied with my current body and just engage in better healthy behaviors. 👇🏽 .

1️⃣ I found a middle ground between healthier quality food choices and my personal preferences for indulging.

2️⃣ I track different markers of health- measurements, body fat percentage, overall calorie deficit, sleep habits, mood & energy.

3️⃣ I’ve worked out consistently for the past 10 years and in the last two years I’ve added weight training. I feel like that has really allowed me to have a more positive body image as well as confidence so ladies don’t be scared to sling around some weights. 💪🏽
4️⃣ I won’t allow myself to quit. I push myself daily even though I have rest and break periods on all of this stuff, at the end of the day, I have been 80% consistent but most certainly not perfect.

The bottom line is, you can have a better body image, you can have a healthier outlook on life, you can achieve all things you put effort into.

Several months ago, I went in to see @drmeganbernard at @halifaxchiro, I was tired, moody, and putting on unwanted belly weight and I NEEDED to understand why. .

So  Dr. Bernard recommended I take a saliva hormone test to get a better picture of what was going on in my body. When the results came back, it turned out I have elevated DHEA - dehydroepiandrosterone which is a fancy name given to the most abundant circulating steroid hormone in the human body. DHEA has the unique ability to act as a hormone precursor for both estrogen and testosterone, and elevated levels may mean my estrogen and testosterone could become unbalanced, and eventually also interfere with my CORTISOL - the body's stress hormone. While it has a very important function in your body, high cortisol can pack on tummy weight and make you extra irritable and on guard! .

▪️Rompa el ayuno nocturno a más tardar 30 minutos.

▪️Al percibir frio en manos y pies entre las comidas, rompa el ayuno inter-pandrial con galletas saladas, palomitas de maíz, papas fritas, queso, frutas secas, dulces…

Melatonin: produced in pineal gland, should start to rise around 3pm when your cortisol should be lowering. Can be helpful for shift workers to maintain healthy circadian rhythms. Melatonin production decreases with age.

GABA: main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the CNS helping with relaxation, pain relief, stress and anxiety reduction. GABA is thought to be able to calm a busy mind before bed to improve sleep.

Tart Cherry Juice: Studies show tart cherry juice can increase exogenous (made outside your body) melatonin. The combination of the melatonin , antioxidants and carbohydrates from the juice makes this an ideal choice for athletes before bed.

Botanicals:

Passionflower: can help anxiey, insomnia, and certain forms of pain because it may increase levels of GABA.

Valerian Root: can inhibit the breakdown of GABA in the brain, resulting in feelings of calmness and tranquility, has antioxidants hesperidin & linarin, which appear to have sedative and sleep-enhancing properties.

Asking for help is HARD. I had to set aside my ego in order to heal my body and the wreck I had it allowed it to become because I couldn't say "NO" and I wouldn't ask for help. .

My hormones were a mess, I had gained 20 pounds (QUICKLY!), I couldn't think clearly, and I was always on edge. I was SO TIRED all the time and I felt like I had ADD x 1 million. .

Asking for help is HARD. I had to set aside my ego in order to heal my body and the wreck I had it allowed it to become because I couldn't say "NO" and I wouldn't ask for help. .

My hormones were a mess, I had gained 20 pounds (QUICKLY!), I couldn't think clearly, and I was always on edge. I was SO TIRED all the time and I felt like I had ADD x 1 million. .
.
I had so much on my plate and I didn't want to disappoint people by saying no. I didn't want anyone to think I couldn't handle what was coming my way. I said yes and kept adding more. And more. And a little bit more. I become resentful. I needed rest. I needed a break. I hated feeling the way I did. I wanted energy. I was SO STRESSED out. .

I love to research facts before I talk about it on this platform and recently I read a 2010 study that explained how women that were on a juice cleans with a caloric intake of approximately 1200 calories had very high levels of cortisol.

Cortisol is the stress hormone and chronic high levels of this hormone is not only associated with weight gain but also with an impaired immune function and heart diseases. 
Before doing anything drastic with your nutrition, please consult a registered dietitian. Unless you must exclude any specific food groups for medical conditions, you should try to eat a vast variety of foods.

Over a longer period, stress is a risk factor for developing depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorders. It also may play a role in relapses of a number of other mental illnesses. Stress can increase levels of cortisol. Elevated cortisol levels interfere with learning and memory, lower immune function and bone density, and increase blood pressure, cholesterol and heart disease. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Go for a run or walk. Sing a song. Go work out. Draw or paint a picture. Play an instrument. Read a magazine. Call a friend. Go to the pet store and play with a puppy or kitten. Go to a bookstore. 🧠 aumenta a lipogênese- a síntese e formação de gorduras
🧠impede a queima de gordura
🧠 te inflama
🧠aumenta a retenção líquida 
É impossível emagrecer com picos de cortisol todos os dias.
COM o estresse: você pode fazer a dieta que for🙏🏻 que não emagrece! .
A dieta tem que ser por AMOR♥️ .
♥️Auto estima : coragem para ser imperfeito🙏🏻 por isso insisto tanto em não usarmos máscaras, de ter coragem de ser vc mesma, de aceitar que o mundo faz barulho, que nem você nem o mundo é perfeito. Aceitar e acreditar no acaso é importante...soltar...desapegar....

🔹Más de 225 kcal. Por cada 100g de alimento (esto ocurre con alimentos procesados que aportan muchas calorías por cada 100g).

The past 2 to 3 years of your diet will reflect the concentration of fatty acids within your adipose tissue. It’s been over 2 years now that I have been detoxing from polyunsaturated fats. I’ve found the primary way to maintain good health is to strictly avoid PUFA’s as much as possible. .......From Ray peats article on Polyunsaturated fats ....( worth a read) “When we don’t eat for many hours, our glycogen stores decrease, and adrenaline secretion is increased, liberating more glucose as long as glycogen is available, but also liberating fatty acids from the fatty tissues. When the diet has chronically contained more polyunsaturated fats than can be oxidized immediately or detoxified by the liver, the fat stores will contain a disproportionate amount of them, since fat cells preferentially oxidize saturated fats for their own energy, and the greater water solubility of the PUFA causes them to be preferentially released into the bloodstream during stress.

In good health, especially in children, the stress hormones are produced only in the amount needed, because of negative feedback from the free saturated fatty acids, which inhibit the production of adrenalin and adrenal steroids, and eating protein and carbohydrate will quickly end the stress. But when the fat stores contain mainly PUFA, the free fatty acids in the serum will be mostly linoleic acid and arachidonic acid, and smaller amounts of other unsaturated fatty acids. O exame é realizado para verificar se a produção de cortisol está elevada ou reduzida no corpo, assim quando elevada pode causar sintomas, como: hipertensão; hiperglicemia; obesidade; períodos menstruais irregulares ou atraso no desenvolvimento e baixa estatura (em crianças). Zu wenig Schlaf schüttet übrigens auch Cortisol aus. Es wird sich auch auf dein Abnehmergebnis positiv auswirken. Besonders, wenn du das Gefühl hast, dass es bei dir stagniert. ⁠

Last week, I had an appointment with a really nice lady that works for a motherhood group in the town I live in. I was telling her about my health history, and the chronic pain I deal with on a daily basis, and she paused and asked me what medications I take. I said none. She was shocked, and said “Wow.” And there was silence. She went on to express how proud she is of me for pushing through without any form of pain relief. These last few days, I was looking at old photos on my camera, and found some shots of me smoking cannabis, which used to be my only method of pain relief before I had my daughter. I used to smoke so much, like, so much... and as much as it shocks me I don’t feel bad about it because it was literally my only form of relief from immense unbearable pain. For the majority of my life I was on every single medication that was out there. I was a guinea pig, trying new meds, old meds, and everything in between... nothing worked, it only made it worse. The last medication was Fentanyl. And that awful medication nearly took my life. I’m lucky to be laid here right now typing this as my daughter sleeps on me. If someone asked me when I was dying, anorexic on fentanyl if I thought I would survive, and be gifted with a beautiful daughter on top of it some years later - I would think they were crazy. But here I am today, alive. And I am so, so grateful. I still have immense pain. I do not take cannabis anymore for it gives me a lot of anxiety now.. I take nothing. I don’t know how I pull through the pain everyday, I really don’t... but all I know is that I would rather push through and build up my mental strength to fight it, or should I say - move through it - instead of going back on any medication, ever. First step to getting my health back, is to have a clean, healthy system. Only putting in herbs and foods that are of the highest vibration that I have access too. So far it’s done me good. I’m alive. And grateful.
