¿Qué es el cortisol?

Laura es una chica que vive en New Jersey.  Su ritmo de vida era muy agitado. Su día transcurría de un lugar a otro y proclamaba que no tenía tiempo para nada por su estrés que se había convertido en cotidiano.

Sus ciclos menstruales eran irregulares, lo que también le angustiaba.  Se sentía, por otro lado, muy abrumada con todo el compromiso laboral, hasta que tuvo que realizar los exámenes médicos

Al cortisol  se le ha denominado la hormona del estrés. Esta es una de las hormonas que se liberan en momentos de presión, angustia y estrés. Ha sido considerada una hormona esencial para vivir, por lo que es sumamente importante mantener los niveles adecuados para estar activos, pendientes y motivados con lo que pasa a nuestro alrededor.

Los niveles anormales de cortisol sean muy altos o muy bajos crean situaciones embarazosas posteriormente.  Esto puede indicar que la secreción excesiva de cortisol puede tener efectos que paralizan a la persona tanto física como psicológicamente.

Son muchas las funciones que cumple la hormona de cortisol en el organismo, aquí se mencionan algunas:

I’ve heard that adrenaline is the most addictive substance that there is, even more addictive than PCP and tobacco.
.
We get a tiny little hit of it and our body wants more, so we do things to inject more adrenaline into the system to feel “normal.“
.
It can be anything from dangerous sports to starting a fight or worrying that gets this adrenaline pumping through the blood.
.
The problem as you may know, is that this overuse of adrenaline (and cortisol which also kicks in) can overload our adrenals to the point where they get exhausted and other parts of the body start to break down too.
.
It is simply not sustainable to keep running on adrenaline and cortisol as a source of fuel. It’s not fuel. .
So we need to untrain ourselves from this habit. We need to find other ways to get energy. And ultimately, we need to be able to recognize the pattern and stop it when it’s happening.
.
So this takes awareness of what adrenaline feels like in your body. And then choosing something different. .
I have many tricks I have learned over the years for how to calm down and counteract adrenaline in the system. In fact, in my last newsletter I shared a powerful one. .

Here’s a few Cool Dietitian recommendations: .

👉🏽Create a calorie deficit that you still feel happy and energetic with (reach out if you want some help with a starting calorie intake!!)
👉🏽Have a flex meal here and there and plan them around fun social events!
👉🏽Move your body a minimum of 30 minutes a day, even an outdoor walk is sooooo beneficial!
👉🏽Check your scale weight occasionally but I recommend checking measurements MORE!

In my 30s, I was a textbook example of a chronically stressed woman. Despite exercise and a healthy diet, my blood sugar was high, and my sugar cravings overwhelmed my self-control. My waist got thicker, and when the cashier at Whole Foods asked if I was pregnant (when I wasn’t), I flew into a rage. My stress-coping mechanisms were faltering. When I started my path to heal my hormones, I discovered that my perception of stress was the true problem—in other words, I’m responsible for manufacturing much of the stress I feel. I am also responsible for my reaction to stress. 
These days I use meditation and other techniques to wrangle my stress so it doesn’t get the best of me.

Alternate-nostril breathing does four lovely things: lowers your pulse, reduces your blood pressure, raises the efficiency of your breathing, and, astonishingly, raises your ability to solve problems. Yogis have been performing it for thousands of years. Only recently we have learned that breathing unilaterally through the right nostril activates the sympathetic nervous system and left hemisphere of the brain and that unilaterally breathing through the left nostril activates the parasympathetic nervous system (the relaxation response) and right hemisphere of the brain. 
The technique involves sitting on the floor and covering one nostril while breathing through the other. 🔹️Cover your right nostril with your right thumb, and inhale through your left nostril while counting slowly to ten. 🔹️Then hold your breath for a count of ten. Notice the sensations in your lower lungs and soft belly, particularly as you reach the higher numbers. 🔹️Sit up straight, but keep your core soft. 🔹️Move your right ring finger to cover your left nostril, release your thumb to uncover your right nostril, and exhale through your right nostril for a slow count to ten. Then inhale through your right nostril, and hold for a count to ten. 🔹️Is the movement of air through the right nostril as smooth as it was through the left? Move your thumb back to cover your right nostril and exhale through your left. 👉Repeat for three more rounds. Do this in traffic, in line at the grocery store, whenever you need a serenity boost.🙏

Your hormones are at their lowest, which means your energy levels may also be a bit lower. Honor your energy levels but incorporate some light movement if you feel up to it.

🌷FOLLICULAR: once your period ends your estrogen starts to rise and you may find you have more energy. Start increasing the intensity of your exercise.

🌺OVULATION: your hormones are at their highest and you may find your energy is the highest in the middle of your cycle. This is a great time for cardio and higher intensity exercise (UNLESS you feel extremely fatigues, low on energy, or kind of burned out – then honor this and stick to more moderate exercise that doesn’t get your heart rate up as high, like strength training or a yoga class)

🌸LUTEAL: your progesterone peaks and then all of your hormones start to decrease until your next period. This is a good time for strength training. Also if you often get PMS symptoms really tap into what your body wants and needs (that may not be forcing yourself to the HIIT class if your just not feeling it).

These are just a guide – it doesn’t mean switch up your ENTIRE workout routine week by week, but rather tap into your energy and adjust accordingly. I personally do mostly yoga and some pilates but will fluctuate between more restorative/yin and more of a power/strength focused.

Do you know how your VERY FIRST morning cortisol response plays into your autoimmune symptoms? Turns out, your spike in cortisol is critical for killing the cells tagged as autoimmune in your Thymus gland. 🤭

It’s your ‘glucocorticoid induced apoptosis of the thymus’ if you’re being more technical. 🤓

I first learned about this from one of my favorite professors from medical school and the Dean of Research and Graduate Studies, @hzwickey . 🙌🏼

This has been a huge AH-HA for me, autoimmune and the HPA axis. 🤓

When your body makes immune cells, it first checks them to make sure they aren’t autoimmune to you already in your Thymus gland. 🤨

This is central tolerance. 👀
.
The bad cells that failed the test are tagged to be killed. This process is induced by the CAR (morning cortisol rise). If your cortisol flatlines or goes down in the morning, then those cells don’t necessarily get destroyed and instead slip out into circulation to cause or worsen autoimmune! 😕

I’m beyond grateful for #allthethings right now, but let’s just say I’ve got this on repeat.  A broken garage door & spilled 7up on the carpet we had cleaned yesterday won’t trip us up from what really matters!

I’m beyond grateful for #allthethings right now, but let’s just say I’ve got this on repeat. A broken garage door & spilled 7up on the carpet we had cleaned yesterday won’t trip us up from what really matters!

"Gehen Sie Joggen" sagte die Ärztin. Da dies dank Knie nicht geht... "Dann schnelles Laufen. Bis zum Blauen Wunder und zurück" hat sie gesagt... Nun. Gestern Nachmittag habe ich rein geschnuppert. Mit den Kindern. Da haben wir knapp 3km geschafft. Heute dann versuch Nr 2. Allein. Da wurden es knapp 5,3km. Auch nicht ganz bis zum Blauen Wunder. Aber einiges näher dran.
Warum ich das machen soll? Tja. Leider gibt es bei mir seit einigen Jahren viel psychischen Stress. Das wirkt sich nun auch auf den Körper aus. Eine #aufbissschiene ist beantragt. Das krampfhafte Aufbeißen zeigt schon Folgen. Zahnschmerzen. Kopfschmerzen. Nackenschmerzen. Und da durch Stress viel #cortisol ausgeschüttet wird, den ich nicht schaffe abzubauen, habe ich ca 8 Kilo in ein paar Monaten zugenommen. Nur am Rumpf. Keine Hose geht mehr zu. Keiner nimmt ernst warum mich das nervt. Wie mich das einschränkt. Das verursacht wieder Streß.
Also schnelles Laufen um Adrenalin aus zu schütten und Streß ab zu bauen. Ob es funktioniert? Keine Ahnung. Wird sich zeigen.

This is the classic type of PCOS, and by far the most common. High insulin and leptin impede ovulation and stimulate the ovaries to make testosterone. Insulin resistance is caused by sugar, obesity, smoking, trans fat, and environmental toxins.

The birth control Pill suppresses ovulation. For most women that is a temporary effect, and ovulation will usually resume fairly soon after the Pill is stopped. But for some women, ovulation-suppression can persist for months or even years. During that time, it is not unusual to be given the diagnosis of PCOS. Some experts deny the existence of Pill-induced PCOS, but it is very real.

3) Inflammatory PCOS
Inflammation or chronic immune activation results from by stress, environmental toxins, intestinal permeability and inflammatory foods like gluten or A1 casein. Inflammation is a problem for PCOS because it impedes ovulation, disrupts hormone receptors, and stimulates adrenal androgens such DHEA and androstenedione.

4) Hidden-Cause PCOS
This is the ‘simpler-than-you-think’ type of PCOS. Fairly often (at least once per week) I encounter a PCOS patient who does not meet any of the criteria for the first 3 types of PCOS. These are my favourite cases, because it usually means that there is one simple thing that is blocking ovulation. Once that single thing is addressed, this type of PCOS resolves very quickly, usually within 3-4 months. Common hidden-causes of PCOS include:
– Too much soy, because it is phytoestrogen and can block ovulation in some women. (A small amount is okay.)
– Thyroid disease, because your ovaries need T3 thyroid hormone.
– Vegetarian diet, because it causes zinc deficiency, and your ovaries need zinc.
– Iodine deficiency, because your ovaries needs iodine. Please be careful with iodine supplementation. – Artificial sweeteners, because they impair insulin and leptin signalling.
– Too little starch in your diet, because your hormonal system needs Gentle Carbs

Manchmal oder auch oft packt er uns. Ob es Leistungsdruck, ein volles Blatt im Terminkalender oder einfach nur der schlechte Tag ist. Stress aus dem Weg zu gehen ist oft schwer. Doch grade, wenn wir eigentlich versuchen wollen uns was Gutes zu tun, wie zum Beispiel eine Gewichtsreduktion für eine bessere Gesundheit oder einfach nur ein "wieder in der eigenen Haut wohlfühlen wollen", ist Stress ein großes Stoppschild ‼

WIESO ❓ Viele, nicht alle, denken oft nach einem stressigen Tag. "Man, dass du das durchgehalten hast heute. Dafür kannst du dir jetzt mal 🍔🍟🌮🍕🍦🍪 reinzwingen!" Warum eigentlich? Tja, ob wir es wahr haben wollen oder nicht - Wir haben schon als Kinder zur Belohnung was super leckeres bekommen. Ob wir brav waren, unser Essen aufgegessen haben.. ist irgendwie anerzogen. Klar ist auch, dass z.B. Schokolade Glückshormone in unserem Körper freisetzt und unser Körper dem Stress entgegensteuern will, bzw. wir das schlechte Gefühl in uns gut machen wollen.

Cortisol ‼ kann aber auch der Grund sein. Unser Körper setzt mehr von diesem frei, je mehr Stress wir haben. Dieses Hormon setzt unseren Körper in Alarmbereitschaft und verlangt Energie in Form von Essen für den Notfall. Außerdem setzt es bereits gespeicherte Energie frei und wandelt diese in noch mehr Fett um... 😱😱😱 Wir sind ausgerichtet für die Steinzeit und nicht für 2019. Unser Körper tut halt alles um zu überleben und arbeitet in diesem Konsumenten-Alltag gegen uns. 💁🏻‍♀️ Kennt ihr das ? Ihr habt kein Hunger, aber irgenwie wollt ihr trotzdem essen? The Yehuda Study; “trauma experienced in one generation, can become the legacy of the next” 
Now this stuff blows my mind guys and just goes to show that not only do we carry the weight of our own traumas/experience etc but those of our mothers and grandmothers. This particular study took place in 2005 by a head neuroscience at a university in New York. What she found was that inter generational trauma is a real thing. So what does that mean? Well basically she looked at survivors of the holocaust & also women who were struggling with PTSD after 9/11 & what she found was that their offspring all exhibited low levels of cortisol which is imperative for your emotional well-being. Along with low cortisol their offspring also had secondary ptsd or secondary depression which proved that the trauma experienced by the mothers and also the trauma experienced by the grandmothers can actually translocate through your DNA TWO generations 🤯 this is such incredible information to spread for awareness for because there are options to release ourselves from generational trauma. Kinesiology is such a great example of these options I just referred to. Kinesiology is all about removing blockages & balancing the body and we are able work with traumas from those before you. Some people may not even make the connection or maybe you do feel like you are carrying the weight of someone else either way your body will do all the talking and tell its story. This is just one of the things I love about this modality , it’s endless uses and possibilities to help heal people 🙌🏼🌿

Here’s a few clips of today’s workout. I know I’m extremely weak because 135lbs felt like 315lbs 😅(this was my last set I did for an amrap). Also got a little bit of cardio in with the sledgehammer and tire and those jumping lunges after leg day had my legs on fire 🔥🥵

Dreaded the workout today because it has been a stressful day and I knew my cortisol was a little lower than normal going into today’s workout. But I sucked it up and still pushed through it. My legs are definitely the area that have lost the most amount of mass for me since all these medical complications started happening and they are definitely weak 😅. But that’s not a worry because leg day is my favorite, even though it takes the most out of me each time. But what can I say, I love torturing myself 😤😂.

The risk of impaired cognitive development is further affected by high levels of cortisol and the quality of parent-infant interaction. For the individual infant that was born preterm, an improved cognitive development is certainly a tremendous gain, providing a healthier life with less cognitive disabilities and associated consequences. Each child that gains a healthier cognitive development also has great economic impact on the societal level, including reduced need for medical care during the entire childhood because of (1) less cognitive impairments such as visual and hearing problems, attention disorders and motor difficulties as well as (2) less psychosocial ill health such as socio- emotional problems, aggressions and depressions. An improved cognitive and socioemotional functioning, with less concentration and learning difficulties is also a great gain when it comes to school achievement and working life. As the bonding process and parent-infant interaction start right after birth, they are both affected negatively by parent-infant separation. If the transfer to family-room, including continuous SSC, can be used to rekindle the bonding process, it will facilitate parent-infant interac- tion. A obesidade Infantil ocorre quando uma criança está acima do peso normal para sua idade e altura. Diferente dos adultos, onde o cálculo é definido através do cálculo do IMC, nas crianças existem as curvas de crescimento e a análise é um pouco mais criteriosa.

De acordo com o IBGE, atualmente uma em cada três crianças no Brasil está pesando mais do que deveria.

A obesidade Infantil ocorre quando uma criança está acima do peso normal para sua idade e altura. Diferente dos adultos, onde o cálculo é definido através do cálculo do IMC, nas crianças existem as curvas de crescimento e a análise é um pouco mais criteriosa.

De acordo com o IBGE, atualmente uma em cada três crianças no Brasil está pesando mais do que deveria.
Os quilos extras podem causar complicações para as crianças não só durante a infância como também em sua vida adulta.

Doenças como diabetes, hipertensão e colesterol alto (dislipidemia) são algumas consequências da obesidade infantil não tratada. A doença também pode levar a baixa autoestima e depressão, o que é extremamente preocupante.

Diversos fatores podem causar obesidade infantil. Entre eles, os mais comuns são: - Fatores genéticos;
- Má alimentação;
- Sedentarismo;
- Ou uma combinação desses fatores.

La primera preocupación de aquellos que temen a la insulina es que es una hormona de almacenamiento, y aunque ciertamente una de sus funciones es transportar los #carbohidratos que comes alrededor del cuerpo y depositarlos donde se necesiten, esto no significa que todos los que ingieras serán almacenados como grasa.

El cuerpo almacena glucógeno en el hígado, células musculares y grasas, y será llevado hacia esos odiosos tejidos adiposos (rollitos, revolveras, o como desees llamarlos) cuando los músculos y el hígado estén llenos. Es decir, al menos que estés consumiendo más CALORÍAS de las que tu cuerpo utiliza, es imposible que almacenes grasa (sin importar la insulina).

La insulina también se encarga de transportar nutrientes a las células musculares, por lo que si haces todo lo posible por mantener bajos los niveles de insulina 24/7 (incluso teniendo miedo al post-entreno), es poco probable que logres desarrollar masa muscular de manera óptima.

Pero, ¿quienes no necesitan preocuparse por la insulina? aquellos que...

- Entrenan duro y regularmente.
- Consumen una distribución equilibrada de macronutrientes (es decir, suficientes proteínas, grasas y carbohidratos adaptadas a los niveles de actividad y entrenamiento)
- Su porcentaje de grasa es medio o bajo (mujeres < 23%).
- Consumen principalmente alimentos ricos en nutrientes (no chatarra todas las noches porque me lo merezco).
- No tienen problemas de diabetes.

En cambio, se ha probado que el #cortisol (el cual se incrementa en el organismo junto al nivel de estrés) reduce la lipólisis, afectando su actividad a mediano o largo plazo.
