I’m back baby! 🙋🏻‍♀️

Today was my first “official” day seeing patients in the clinic. Our office has systems in place to make sure we are reducing every possible risk. I was the only doctor in the office this morning which felt a little odd! The doctors at Spine and Sports are coordinating office time to make sure clinic traffic stays as low as possible to reduce exposure to others. My hands still smell like bleach from cleaning our equipment with virucidal wipes. 🦠 •
This isn’t normal. It won’t be normal for a while. Even so, I can’t tell you how happy I am to be helping my people and connecting in person again. I’m going to be transparent because this is no time for keeping up with appearances: This quarantine has been very challenging for me (as it has on a lot of my fellow chiros/therapists) because a part of my identity was lost when I wasn’t able to serve and help in the clinic anymore. While I pivoted to online doctoring, I still experienced a lot of grief surrounding this loss. I’m about to make an incredible comeback and be even BETTER for my patients after some down time. I’m ready. 👩🏻‍⚕️

💬 Let's chat about the Sacroiliac Joint (SIJ). This joint is formed between your pelvis and tail bone and can be responsible for a lot of grief - particularly in the low back and buttock/hip region. This joint, when irritated, can also cause referred pain down the buttock and leg - MIMICKING SCIATICA! ⚡⚡ Those who are in ACUTE pain will have a tough time standing on one leg, getting up and out of a seat (getting out of a car), or just feel pain in the area when walking or going up/down stairs. This tends to happen following heavy lifting or doing intense activity 🏋️‍♂️

✔Chronic pain will present with similar signs & symptoms but usually at a lesser intensity. Issues with chronic SIJ pain can be complex - an assessment looking at foot function, knees, hips, and pelvic alignment will go a long way to determine what the root cause is. Usually the muscles that attach to the pelvis are tight and tender as well (as they struggle to help control the pelvic bowl)

✔Whether or not you are experiencing acute or chronic pain - one thing holds true - you need to start increasing the tolerance to load of you tissues. Today we go over varying exercises that work on strengthening and stabilizing the SIJ - however you should know that a full program will also look at foot, ankle, knee, hip, and spinal control

The difference lies in the contrast between AC (Alternating Current) and DC (Direct Current). Most devices out there that you’ve tried are AC. And although they can have some benefits at lower levels, there is actually a significant limitation on what you can accomplish with AC devices because of their effect on the nervous system. ⁠
⁠
When turned up to a high enough level to challenge the neuromuscular system, AC devices cause muscles to co-contract and fight against each other. This signal stiffens the body and creates excessive tension, reinforcing the same protective, guarding, and bracing patterns that slow down the healing process in the first place. It’s as if you were trying to drive a car while hitting the throttle and brake pedals at the same time. Very inefficient. ⁠
⁠
In addition to wasting energy, it’s even possible that causing the muscles to stiffen and shorten may increase the risk of injury. We want to be pliable. We want to be able to bend but not break. This pliability requires suppleness in the muscles - yet AC devices may create the exact opposite effect.⁠
⁠
Thankfully, the DC signal of the Neubie has a more positive effect on muscle tone. Rather than causing muscles to shorten and stiffen, it can actually cause them to relax and become more supple and pliable. It does this through a new type of neuromuscular re-education, which focuses on providing sensory (or afferent) stimulation so that the brain can choose to reduce muscle tone in the area of the stimulation. And because this approach stimulates the brain and nervous system to change its own patterns, the changes will often last a lot longer than traditional interventions and treatments.⁠

What position do you find yourself in most often? If you said flexed forward, you’re not alone. A lot of our daily activities such as working at a desk, watching tv, reading a book or scrolling through your phone result in that rounded forward spine position 🤷🏻‍♀️ Like I’ve said, no posture is inherently bad BUT you do want to move your spine consistently in all directions in order to maintain a required level of mobility!

Mobility refers to our joints and our ability to actively move that joint through its range of motion in a controlled manner. We require various levels of spinal mobility in our everyday activities + is an essential component in maintaining spinal health #MotionIsLotion 🤸🏻‍♀️ Although everyone’s optimal range of motion is different depending on what you require your body to do, spinal mobility exercises may help to reduce back pains, prevent injury, enhance your workouts and keep adjacent joints moving well ✅

550lb top set #squats. Was supposed to be a single, but there was a shift so I took it again. Perfect practice prevents piss poor performance.  Followed with 8x5 paused front #squat at 225 to help correct the shift.
