For my entire teenage years I obsessively planned the meals I would eat and wouldn’t eat everyday 🌮. I never wanted my family or friends to see how I micromanaged my food intake 🍳, so each day I had to know what meals I would be eating with others so I knew what meals I could skip when alone. Date night?💕Family dinner?🍲 Pizza with friends?🍕I would prepare for those occasions by skipping out on breakfast (sometimes lunch, too) in order to save calories for social eating occasions so I could hide my restrictive habits from all those around me. This made me feel isolated, alone and trapped in a restrictive food cycle that only I knew about and dealt with.💔⠀

What I didn’t know as a teen was how damaging restrictive food habits can be to metabolism!🤯 I was frustrated in highschool because I would restrict during the day, only to find myself binging in the evening and before bed🍫. On top of it, it became harder and harder to reach that magical weight I wanted to be at as years progressed🤔. My metabolism was confused and slowed down!!! My own body had outsmarted me.🙈while studying to become a Registered Dietitian in college, I learned my metabolism had slowed from years of chronic restriction📆. From that point on I decided I needed to make a change, and eat the way my body deserved. This felt scary, but I knew I had to put my health first. Today I eat what I want, when I want without restriction, and feel much more confident in my body than I was as a teen.🙌⠀

So when the typical advice “move more, eat less” isn’t working, what do you do to drop that last bit of fat to get down to 6 pack ab level?

Well, this definitely needs to be turned into a blog post because I have dozens of reasons, but more on that later.

The majority of the clients I work with have found themselves stuck in that “skinny fat” position (slim but a bit of excess body fat, while lacking muscle development).

And it’s very frustrating because you don’t know if you should try and cut to lose the body fat or focus on building more muscle…
⠀
One of the first things I start getting my clients to focus on is eating what I like to call Pro-Metabolic foods 🔥

Among the many reasons why you aren’t burning fat we’re going to focus on this one…inflammation.
⠀
Two of the biggest causes of inflammation are:
⠀
Rancid Oils - Oils that have been exposed to high heat or high pressure which are normally polyunsaturated fats like canola, safflower, peanut, vegetable, sunflower. Restaurants use them, most packaged foods have them, all the way to pizza and fries and even foods at “healthy” stores like Whole Foods & Trader Joes might have em’ 🤢

Chronic stress - working too much, relationship issues, tragic event, poor breathing patterns, eating in a rush, excessive exercise (especially cardio), etc. start to lead to excessive inflammation in the body 😡

💧Drinking purified water increased resting metabolic rate with 2.7%, while the fake drinking condition also increased metabolism with 1.5%.⁣

📉This ~3% increase in resting metabolism is almost negligible and much lower than some earlier studies claimed (e.g. ~30% increase: 1,2). It is also lower than the theoretical cost of heating up the water from room temperature to body temperature.⁣

Let’s face it! Our 40s are no walk in the park! Our weight will go up, especially around our midsection, and that constant battle for losing those extra lbs. it’s getting way harder! .

So, estrogen and progesterone dips, we start to lose muscle, our metabolism slows down, and all of this makes it so much easier for us to gain weight, but much harder to lose it! .

However, it is not impossible with the right strategies and tools to lose the extra weight and even end up feeling better, healthier and fitter than before!

What can we do?

Because we start losing muscle mass after we turn 40(Sarcopenia) and our metabolism slows down prioritizing #weighttraining is a must. Lifting weights also raises HGH Hormone, that combined with cortisol will help achieve fat loss. Plus, more muscle=more calories burned at rest.

Adding protein to all your meals will also help you build and maintain muscle with the added benefit of keeping you full for longer and balancing your blood sugar, helping with hunger and cravings! Same with veggies!

Since we become more insulin resistant, managing our starches is also a good idea(I did not say eliminate)and figure out how much of it to eat, enough for us maintain energy and help us build muscle without over doing it, causing then fat store  instead.

We are also more sensitive to stress after our 40s so managing it, becomes a priority. Do more relaxation activities, get enough sleep, rest, recovery!  Remember, the more stress we have, the more cortisol we accumulate(our fat storing hormone).😣

Because unbalanced hormones, insulin resistance and sugar are not a good combo, keep the wine for special occasions and skip the nighttime relaxation glass, which could actually cause the opposite effects and keep you up at night. (I KNOW😝) On that note, drink mostly water and try to avoid sugary drinks.

I hope you all are having the best thursday ever like we are over here at the Cunningham's house!
We had our cheat meal for lunch and it left me drained and exhausted I had to take a 2 hr nap!! No worries tho! Nothing is a problem just sipping on my herbal tea concentrate which is picking up my energy fast 🔋 helping boost my metabolism so I can burn that cheat meal faster and aloe helping my tummy from bloating like that cheat meal never happend! 😄not to mention this tea helps me burn 80-100 calories just by drinking it! HELLO ENERGETIC MOM 😂 waiting for the baby to wake up for more play time.

Ps: I always find my husband more hilarious when I'm caffeinated and have energy 😂😂

Some days I wake up bloated AF🤰🏼& not feelin sexy... Other days (like today!) I feel leaner and my abs are more visible!⁣

It's tough being female sometimes; we have hormones that fluctuate throughout the month & can make us feel like we gained 5lbs overnight... who else has felt this?!⁣

You put your pants on & they're a little more snug than yesterday, and can't tell if this is bloat or fat? Frustrating... I know ☹️⁣

Bloat comes & goes, depending on a few factors. I want you to know this is totally normal & happens to all of us; don't get down on yourself! This is what yoga pants are for 😉 BUT if you're bloated more often than not, there's probably something going on with your gut health that could be improved. (P.S. healing your gut can help with long-term weight loss & increase your energy!)⁣

🤷🏼‍♀️So how can tell the difference between bloat & fat?⁣
• if your period is coming within the week (or its day 1) - it's bloat! thank your hormones...🙄⁣
• aren't regular? - improving your digestion will clear that up! 💩⁣
• feeling gassy after a meal? - find out what food sensitivities you have! 🧄⁣
• been overindulging for weeks/months? - this is probably extra body fat that can sneak up on you... (P.S. I'm here to help! 🙋🏼‍♀️)⁣

HOW TO CALCULATE MAINTENANCE CALORIES

Maintenance. To many it sounds scary, to me it sounds like a breath of fresh air.

If you’ve been dieting for what seems like forever, it may be time to consider some time of going into maintenance/diet break.

Fat loss is taxing, both mentally and physically.

And you know what? Being in a fat loss phase is not forever.

If you want to take a break, transition from fat loss to maintenance, or want to optimize muscle growth, then maintenance is for you.

How do you do it?

Good question.

Start by multiplying your body by 14-16, 14 being more conservative, 15, 16 for the more active/more muscular group.

Once you get that number, slowly transition from your deficit calories.

You’ll find you’ve reached your maintenance when your weight hovers between 1-5 lbs.

Don’t be scared of maintenance, be scared of being in a deficit because you fear gaining weight.

Just like there are phases of life, there are phases of health and fitness. Each phase plays its own purpose.

This formula is just a general starting point for maintenance. It’s important to say that you’re maintenance is always changing based on activity level and an increase in lean body mass...any many more reasons.

Create a range of maintenance. Example 2,100-2,400 calories. Give yourself some room.
