Real talk: One of my favorite sayings I always share with my clients is that the best exercise is the one you can consistently do!😝 If you like cardio, that’s fantastic for your weight loss goals BUT I also have to be honest: just because you burn more calories doing cardio doesn't make it better for weight loss!🙊⠀

Similar to the mindset of many of my #fitbabe clients, I used to focus on burning the most amount of calories I could in my workouts🔥and continue to push myself running 5-6 miles every day despite not seeing the changes I wanted to😭 I felt fit because I was literally always working out but I honestly didn’t really look fit, which was super discouraging😫⠀⠀

To be honest I was obsessed with cardio🙅🏼‍♀️and it was holding me back from feeling confident in my body. It wasn’t until I learned about strength training during my Master’s Degree in Nutrition that I realized just how amazing this style of training is for fat loss and toning up🙏🏻 Although how many calories you burn is important for weight loss, only focusing on burning the most amount of calories you can may hold you back from your goals! That’s because while cardio may burn more in the moment, the muscle you build by lifting weights burns way more after your workout and transforms your body🎉⠀

Knowing this, I was still scared to cut back on cardio because I got so used to eating so little and focusing on burning as many calories as possible to manage my weight😔 but I reminded myself that to achieve something you’ve never had you have to do something you’ve never done. I was super scared to lift weights at first, but I didn’t let the fear and unknown stop me from learning and trying it out and I don’t want it to stop you either!❤️⠀

For my entire teenage years I obsessively planned the meals I would eat and wouldn’t eat everyday 🌮. I never wanted my family or friends to see how I micromanaged my food intake 🍳, so each day I had to know what meals I would be eating with others so I knew what meals I could skip when alone. Date night?💕Family dinner?🍲 Pizza with friends?🍕I would prepare for those occasions by skipping out on breakfast (sometimes lunch, too) in order to save calories for social eating occasions so I could hide my restrictive habits from all those around me. This made me feel isolated, alone and trapped in a restrictive food cycle that only I knew about and dealt with.💔⠀

What I didn’t know as a teen was how damaging restrictive food habits can be to metabolism!🤯 I was frustrated in highschool because I would restrict during the day, only to find myself binging in the evening and before bed🍫. On top of it, it became harder and harder to reach that magical weight I wanted to be at as years progressed🤔. My metabolism was confused and slowed down!!! My own body had outsmarted me.🙈while studying to become a Registered Dietitian in college, I learned my metabolism had slowed from years of chronic restriction📆. From that point on I decided I needed to make a change, and eat the way my body deserved. This felt scary, but I knew I had to put my health first. Today I eat what I want, when I want without restriction, and feel much more confident in my body than I was as a teen.🙌⠀

Here we have a matcha pudding, topped with some overnight oats! For those that aren’t as familiar, matcha is like a potent green tea. A single serving of matcha (1 tsp), is equivalent to 10 cups of green tea! Matcha can boost your metabolism and burn calories, enhance mood, prevent disease and lower blood sugar and cholesterol! 😱⁣

I've been working on building the healthiest gut possible- I had Grave's disease (autoimmune thyroid condition) & since all autoimmune disease begins in the gut, I've been on a mission to heal my leaky gut for the past few years! When I was 22, my health was at it's worst. Despite eating a "healthy" diet, my gut was so bad and I was exhausted ALL. THE. TIME. I could barely make it through a walk as it felt like I was wearing heavy boots & I was 22 going on 80.⁣

Can we talk about HIIT workouts? ⠀

There is no such thing as a science based, hour long HIIT class. You may be working hard, but if the class is an hour long it is not true 'HIIT'. The work intervals in a HIIT class should be an all out effort, and if you can do them for an hour (even with rest intervals) you are not working hard enough for them to work their magic. 30 minutes, with specific work to rest ratios is about as long as true HIIT should last. ⠀

A hard workout is not necessarily a HIIT (Hight Intensity Interval Training) workout. An intense workout is not necessarily a HIIT workout. Pounding someone into the ground and breaking their soul, spirit and thyroid health is not HIIT. ⠀

HIIT has specific work to rest parameters that activate its fat burning and metabolism boosting benefits, but sadly the term is used in the fitness industry without any regard or understanding of its scientific principles (and don't get me started on the misuse of the word 'Tabata')...⠀

Whilst most of you know me as a Holistic Nutritionist I still am a Certified Personal Trainer and started my health and wellness career in boutique fitness over 15 years ago. This knowledge still informs my work with my clients wishing to balance their blood sugar, boost their metabolism and lower their body fat percentage. I was talking with someone the other day about how many times people have just been asking me how I’m feeling. ⁣

It felt like the first two weeks I was still accepting everything that was going on but now that we are in the third week it’s starting to sink in that it could be months before I get to see family and friends, and I have to be honest I felt pretty down. ⁣

I luckily have been surrounded by my co-workers in health care and I also have a roommate. My heart goes out to those that are spending this time completely alone and those that have lost loved ones. ⁣
⁣I’ve never experienced anything like this in my life and I’m also searching for the best way to navigate through keeping myself motivated and focused. ⁣

When trying to lose weight, one of the biggest reasons you give up before seeing results is an uncontrollable appetite! If you can relate, this one’s for you❤️Recently a babe in my Small Group Coaching Program👯‍♀️ had come to me really confused about what to eat for her goals. She had been following me on Instagram🤳🏼 for a few months and after hearing me talk about calorie counting, she had decided to take matters into her own hands. This babe began tracking her calories and focusing on the first step of my proven weight loss method🤗

Although she was eating the “right” amount of calories it was hard for her to stick to long term because she kept getting hungry!😔 She would hit her target calorie range some days but others when she was hungry, then go over those calories and not see progress on the scale🙅🏼‍♀️

Truth is, hitting your calories is the first step of my method for a reason. No matter what you eat, you gotta eat less calories than what your body burns for weight loss. While you can fit in higher calorie foods into your diet when you learn how to be calorie conscious❤️ there is something really important about low calorie foods like fruits & veggies for your goals, too😘

You can adjust the portion of high calorie foods like nutella🍫and crackers to be the same amount of calories as low calorie options like broccoli🥦 however foods with low energy density (like fruits and veggies) provide a greater volume of food per serving. When we looked at her diet, she was eating smaller portions of high calorie foods and went days without a significant portion of fruits and veggies🙈 We set a goal to eat more of these foods at meals beginning with lunchtime… and this babe finally felt full! Oh, and she immediately saw the scale drop 2 pounds in 1 week🎉

It is highly recommended to eat every 3-4 hours a day to maintain a healthy metabolism.
Let me put it this way..your bodys machinery works in your favour but when you decide to not eat for too long or fast you decide to completely turn off this machinery..and then when you eat, this machinery takes really long to start and work at its full potential. .
So, it’s important to eat often and don’t let your metabolism slow/ shut down.
Every time you eat your metabolism increases for a few hours, meaning it will be churning more calories so WHY NOT?

Food is your friend and will only work in your favour depending how you allow it to. Think about it 🙏🏼

What is Metabolism? Simply put, it is the chemical reactions that take place in your body, and these reactions keep your body alive and functioning. Sounds important right?

By increasing your metabolism you can burn more calories, lose more weight and increase your energy, thus making you feel better overall.

When your cells are properly hydrated they are functioning at their optimal level, and the body’s ability to create and burn energy is increased. To be more specific (and stay with me), optimal hydration at the cellular level is allowing the cells to restore glucose transport across the cell membrane and increase the cell’s sensitivity to insulin. The increased sensitivity to insulin improves the body’s ability to lose weight.

On the reverse, when a cell shrinks due to dehydration, the body is signaled to slow down the process of metabolism and burn fewer calories. This is not what you want so DRINK THAT WATER.
