I’m about to get REAL personal with you

Picture on the left was March. Picture on the right was this morning. What changed in my eating habits? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. So why the change? .
.
On the left, I was unhappy, depressed, suffering from chronic fatigue, adrenal fatigue, food sensitivities, hormone imbalances and chronic Epstein Barre virus. At this point I was already eating strict Paleo for 4 years and taking my supplements daily. Then I hit a MAJOR stressor in my life. This threw my body for a loop and caused major imbalances in my biochemistry. So I reran some tests and edited my supplement regimen

Picture on the right, I finally learned the term “self care”. Not just in my Nutrition, but in my life. I learned how to say no to family and friends, and only do what made me thrive. I’ve always exercised a lot, but I started lifting weights... HEAVY weights. I joined CrossFit and haven’t turned back! I tapped into my mental health and discovered what made me happy. I learned how to live my life for ME instead of making other people happy. After all, it is my life to live. I addressed my food sensitivities and avoided them completely. Sensitivities can be more than just gluten and dairy. Two of mine were blackberries and flaxseeds! I rebalanced my hormones and gave nutritional support to my adrenal glands. I took a personal day if my mental health needed it. .

What’s the take home message?? You can eat a perfect diet and exercise daily and still struggle with weight. If your body is not functioning properly, weight gain will come. As I mentioned, there was no calorie change in my diet. No real macro change in my diet. But my thyroid is functioning better and I have my Epstein barre symptoms at bay. My hormones are better and my cortisol production is now under control. All of this was initiated by a stressful event. Yes I had to work on my stress relief techniques, but proper nutritional support played one of the BIGGEST roles. .

Like I say, Nutrition is more than just diet. It’s about Nutrients feeding the body. How are those nutrients allowing the body to function and are you deficient in any area. THAT is what is important.

This is SO IMPORTANT, yet not very well known 🤔. In practice, I see about 98% of clients having some form of an MTHFR mutation. It’s easier for me to say I’ve only ever seen TWO people without it! .

This enzyme is important for cycling through your bodies energy systems and detoxification. It is important in allowing your bodies biochemistry to work optimally
.

With a mutation in this gene, you have a decreased ability to detox. Depending on which gene you have, and how many, greatly impacts how your body can detox
.
.
In this specific example, it shows how your body detoxes or holds onto mercury. This is just one piece of the puzzle. Many other things can be impacted by this gene including heart disease, mental illness and other things such as PCOS and cancers. .
.
First tip, GET TESTED! Second tip, don’t be scared! As long as you learn how to properly support this mutation, you can live a normal life! .
.
I myself have a single mutation in both the A1298C and C677T gene! That means my detoxification system is decreased by 80%!!!! That is why I live the life I do and make sure I take care of my body first! .

But one of the most commonly neglected piece of this equation is the velocity of movement. Sure we try to move weights faster to build power but we often don’t hit the far end of the force velocity curve when it comes to speed.

Band assisted jumps are a quick and easy way to lighten the load of jumps even more, in turn allowing your muscles to contract at an even higher velocity.

In fact I was able able to reach peak velocities as high as 3 m/s whereas with body weight box jumps I was only able reach peak velocities of around 1.7.

After years of training for primarily max strength and neglecting velocity, I have gotten stronger but my ability to use that force quickly has lagged. Using banded jumps will hopefully “rewire” me a bit to move faster, which is pivotal for #dunktoberfest. By cooking in a skillet, the juices caramelize into this fantastic sauce that adds an entire new element to the steak. Paired this with the basics, a baked potato and broccoli! We started a gym with a focus on CrossFit. We have grown to offer many more options and we plan on continuing to find ways to help people improve Human Performance!

In 2002 I learned how training can truly positively impact human performance, in 2009 I graduated with a degree in Exercise Science and started training people while continuing to learn everything I could about physical training and human performance (as I’m still trying to learn everyday!). 2011 I left Golds Gym and rented space on my own in a studio, December 2011 I attended a CrossFit Level 1 certificate course, then in December 2012/7 years ago Nucleus bought a building. We started a gym with a focus on CrossFit. We have grown to offer many more options and we plan on continuing to find ways to help people improve Human Performance!

Remember, if you are physically active you need carbs. Recently there has been a high interest in the Keto diet. Yes, I’ve tried it, so I’ve been there

But the Keto diet is not meant for any sort of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). When you are in a fat burning ketogenic state, you can only perform at about 70% of your VO2 max. This refers to your heart rate and your oxygen intake. This means that you can basically only work at 70%
.

This is great for marathon runners. These athletes need to preserve their energy and perform for longer stretches. .
.
Once you start getting above 70% of your VO2 max in sports such as Crossfit or any other type of HIIT, you need that immediate source of energy
.
.
That, my friends, comes from carbs! .
.
So be smart about your diet choices. Know what you’re doing for what you wish to do in your fitness goals. Talk to a professional before making any drastic changes, or else your athletic performance will suffer! .

For years I tried sticking to social norms of low carb, three meals a day, calorie restriction. None of that worked.

I am extremely physically active. I dance, I Crossfit, I run around with children (not mine 😊)... basically I never sit. I’m always moving, always sweating. So low carb calorie restriction does not work for me

Recently I started paying attention to macros, and I realized I was severely under eating. Now I’m consuming anywhere between 5-7 meals per day and not feeling guilty about eating. Instead, I’m embracing it! .
Now that I am eating more, my body is no longer in starvation mode, and it’s not holding onto weight. It can finally thrive! .
Of course I still have to keep in mind all of my food sensitivities or else the weight will just come right back, but I am encouraging you... if you are active... EAT! You need it! .

I was particularly excited to meet @brookewellss as she is probably my Biggest inspiration. Why is that? Because I can relate to her. We have similar stories, and that makes her more real. To be fully invested in either of those sports takes a certain type of individual with a certain mindset. It teaches you that everything you want in life is EARNED and you have to work hard. Simple, yet delicious! Chicken thighs made in the cast iron skillet with a side of cauliflower rice and asparagus! For the side, I first sautéed onions and garlic in some olive oil with desired spices. Second I added the asparagus to cook that through. Once the asparagus was done, I added the cauliflower for just a few more minutes! This meal took me 25 minutes start to finish! Those are the ones I like 👍🏼😊

Getting worked on by the lovely @brigie_g pre competition day! I had some shoulder pain and clicking during my workout this week, and this wonderful lady flew in to save the day so I can perform at my max tomorrow! Thanks to her, my shoulder is loosened up, I’m all taped up for tomorrow, but most importantly I am aware of what is happening with my shoulder and what needs to be done to improve it

I highly recommend Brigid for Physical Therapy. She is so unbelievably knowledgeable about what she does and you can just FEEL her passion. Her goal is to keep you moving and provides you with the tools to help you enjoy your favorite sport or hobby. This is SO IMPORTANT, yet not very well known 🤔. In practice, I see about 98% of clients having some form of an MTHFR mutation. It’s easier for me to say I’ve only ever seen TWO people without it! .

This enzyme is important for cycling through your bodies energy systems and detoxification. It is important in allowing your bodies biochemistry to work optimally

With a mutation in this gene, you have a decreased ability to detox. Depending on which gene you have, and how many, greatly impacts how your body can detox

In this specific example, it shows how your body detoxes or holds onto mercury. This is just one piece of the puzzle. Many other things can be impacted by this gene including heart disease, mental illness and other things such as PCOS and cancers. .

First tip, GET TESTED! Second tip, don’t be scared! As long as you learn how to properly support this mutation, you can live a normal life! .

Quick, easy, and delicious! This grass fed steak was cooked in a cast iron skillet with a little bit of oil olive oil. Seasoned it with salt, pepper, garlic powder and fresh rosemary. By cooking in a skillet, the juices caramelize into this fantastic sauce that adds an entire new element to the steak. Paired this with the basics, a baked potato and broccoli!
