📚
In the current situation, adventures are probably best found in the pages of a book.
📖
The Book:
📘
- ‘Adventure Stories From The Strand’
- Published By The Folio Society in 1995.
📖
This is 2nd of the books that I found in @oxfambooksreigate along with ‘Short Stories From The Strand’ which featured in my previous post.
📚
A compilation of adventures that were originally published in The Strand Magazine between 1899-1949. It includes memorable titles such as:
🏰
‘How The Brigadier Came To The Castle Of Gloom’ - By Arthur Conan Doyle.
⚔️
‘The Lost Legion’ - By Rudyard Kipling.
😳
‘An Eventful Day In The Life Of Miss Faversham’ - By Richmal Crompton
😱
‘The Purple Terror’ - By Fred M. White
👵🏻
& probably my favourite for its title alone;
‘The Adventure Of The Cantankerous Old Lady’ - By Grant Allen
📖
The objects:
🧭
My Nesco Compass which I’ve had since I was a little boy. 🔍
A Magnifying Glass
🦯
An African Gadget Stick, which when the handle is removed, reveals a spear head!
🇿🇦 A Zulu Beadwork Baby’s Loincloth, which was given to my adventurous ancestors, when they were made honorary members of the Zulu tribe.
🌈
In Zulu culture the colourful glass beadwork is used to communicate messages known as “ucu” which roughly translates as ‘Love Letters’.
💌
The 7 colours all have a dual positive & negative meaning, except for white which is always positive, symbolising purity, love, & honesty. Subtle variation of the glass bead colour can modify the message that they convey as well. 🌈
To correctly decipher the message you would probably have to ask someone from the actual village where it was made, as the meaning can vary quite dramatically.
👶🏼
There is photographic evidence somewhere of me wearing this when I was a baby, so I particularly hope the meaning is auspicious!
🤍🖤❤️💗💛💙💚
Wishing that all the messages you receive in these testing times are positive & full of love & hope for the future.
🌈

There are a host of reasons to be anxious when you’re the mother of an infant during a global pandemic, but one absolute grace is that he is blissfully unaware. ❤️
.
How are the parents out there doing keeping their anxiety in check? And their children busy?

I was looking at my test results from @ancestry and I realized that after 5 years of hard work, I can now identify a actual person or family from which each of my percentages come from. When I received my initial results, I had no idea how all these places made up my DNA results. I now know why my family immigrated from one place to the next and I feel like I really understand my family history story better than ever. The authentic story of me and how I came to be is all right here. My DNA kept my story when everything else was taken away. Have you taken a DNA test? Did you know that professionals recommend taking more than one test? #thisisfamilyhistory #ancestrydna #ancestry #familyhistory #rootstech #dna

ANCESTRALIDADE (English version below)

ANCESTRY

In many situations in our lives, we find behavioural patterns that seem to have been passed onto us through our family genes. They were repeated by our great-grandmother, our grandmother, our mother, us… As much as we do not want something in the family to repeat itself, it happens. So, it is time to make peace with all the people who came before us. It is time to thank them for the fact that life was made possible through them, even if they were not perfect. Nobody is.

How could you go through a family situation by honouring your ancestors?

I was thinking about my grandpa recently. I didn’t see him as much as my other grandparents and he was always quiet when I did. He lived in a beautiful house built in 1900 with a big manicured lawn and gardens that always seemed to be blooming.
.
Going to his house felt like an escape. It was full of wonder and mystery, but I could find solace in every room. Even though he didn’t have any kids toys, golf was the only thing ever on the TV, and he wasn’t the type to get down and play with us... I have the fondest memories of lawn mower wagon rides, pennies on the railroad track, and walking to the post office that seemed about as old as the Pony Express itself.
.
He was in the Air Force during WWII, back when it was still part of the Army. He was the first person I ever knew in the military. I was always curious about the picture of him in his uniform. I wanted him to tell us stories of flying in the war. I wanted to know about this life he had before he was known as just “Grandpa”.
.
He died 15 years ago, so I’ll probably never know those stories. But I think he’s what started my interest in history, record keeping, genealogy, and story telling. Don’t let your stories die with you.

I interrupt your day to bring you a lesson in sharing from my sister and I. When given a choice to keep your popsicle to yourself or share with your baby sister, always share (especially if a camera is pointed at you. Then at least share until the photo is taken and go back to devouring the rest of said popsicle by yourself).

This one’s an Easter quote but isn’t it amazing that we can celebrate these things every single day?

I’m thinking about going Live tonight to show all the new colors and answer questions. What do you think??

A year ago today, Roots of Reality was created in hopes of using history to help inspire a better future, by reminding us of the incredible billions of years of history that led to us. Thus, I wanted to thank all of you for supporting this project with all the likes, comments, and podcast reviews. It means a ton and I am very thankful for them! You all represent many different nations, beliefs, and political views, but most importantly together you represent what this project is all about, showing that at the end of the day, we are all one species in this world together, connected by one shared human history, and writing the next chapter of our history together.

In turn, since this project is all about historical inspiration. I wanted to share with all of you a personal historical inspiration. My ancestor Heinrich Baumann, who was born in 1857, in a small village in Switzerland to a very poor family. Starting from a young age his life was filled with difficulties. It began when he was 3 years old and his father died. Later, as a married adult he started a family and moved to the city of Zurich for work, but could still barely afford to feed his children. Thus, he took a chance and moved his family to the United States of America in 1888 in hopes of a better life. While there, he worked long hours as a weaver in a silk mill factory just to survive. Then 20 years later he had to live through the 1918 Flu Pandemic, which killed over half a million people in the U.S. and at least 25 million in the world. In addition, he also lived through the great depression starting in 1929, which was the worst economic disaster in modern history. In fact, in the U.S. 20% of the population had no jobs. Despite all of this though, he and his family manage to overcome it, and as a result gave me the opportunity for life.

So, in these chaotic times in the world, we could all use a little inspiration, so I ask you to share a story about one of your ancestors in the comments below, because without our ancestors we don't exist and they are our personal reminder of what we are all capable of overcoming in this world. Share with your friends and use the hashtag: #MyHistoricalInspiration

an empty entry in James Farrer’s diary #onthisday, 1st April... he could hardly have imagined what we’re collectively going through now! The last major plague outbreak had happened around a hundred years before the diary was written, and Defoe’s Journal of the Plague Year has been around since 1722, so pandemics were probably in collective consciousness, if no longer in living memory. Surely, if this #pandemic were happening in eighteenth-century England, it would have been seen as a (jolly bad!) sign from God? 😷 .

#genealogy ... Happy Census Day! 🎉 The U.S. Constitution mandates a census of the population every 10 years and if you live in America you should have received a 2020 Census invitation a couple of weeks ago. A little less than 40% have responded and if you’re in the camp of “oh I mean to do that but haven’t had a minute to sit down” (🙋🏻‍♀️) consider this your official instruction to get ‘er done today. The census is important for so many reasons beyond genealogy but as family historians we should be especially excited! Get yourself found by future generations by reporting complete and accurate information about your household. 🏠 #censusday #2020census

Happy Census Day!

The Census helps determine what the next decade will look like for your community: healthcare, roads, schools, representation, and more.
Personally I have also used census data to help with my ancestry research. Heavenly shout out to my ancestors who have been providing a data trail to follow since 1870. 🙏🏽 The 2020 Census counts every person living in the United States and five U.S. territories. 🇺🇸 In mid-March, homes across the country began receiving invitations to complete the 2020 Census. Once the invitation arrives, you should respond to your home in one of three ways: online, by phone, or by mail.
Do your part. Leave your mark. Shape your family 👪 legacy. .

This is my great grandmother's sister, Edith Bowes (1892-1918). Pretty much all I know about her is that she died from #influenza soon after graduating nursing school, and that she is buried with her parents in Numidia PA.
When avidly piecing together my family history a bunch of years back, there certainly were people who I'd like to have learned more about, wonder what would have become of them, etc. Losing a relative during that pandemic definitely caught my eye. Likewise, have so many friends or connections on the front lines now, not to mention other industries and lines of work where their health is put at risk certainly gives me pause.

I said I wanted to breathe new life into our family photo album and they said didn’t mind (2019)

My adorable little mom Henriëtte, with one of her 3 brothers, Karel. He was 13 years older.
My mother called him "Ami". I think that's so cute. 🥰

She was born in 1954, he in 1941 as the first child of his parents Jim and Yta.
He will be 80 next year, she only lived until her 52nd year.

They differed too much in age to have an actual bond when they were younger. But they got along just fine once they were older. Different types of people, but they shared the same parents. Thus, mostly the same (challenging) childhood to look back upon and its consequences to deal with.

Their father's early death at age 61, their mother's dementia later in life. The taking care of each other, included taking care of their mother too. And that had started when they were young already, they had gotten used to the reversed roles and responsibility for their mothers wellbeing from a young age.
She was two-faced and could be very self absorbed. She was darkness and light wrapped in one soul. She was social and welcoming, as long as she got her attention. If not, she would faint. On command.
She actually thrived in the role of the grieving widow.

My mom passed away 7 years before her mother, who reached the ripe old age of 92, even if she wasn't aware of it anymore. She wasn't aware of much anymore, those final years. Probably a good thing...

My adorable little mom Henriëtte, with one of her 3 brothers, Karel. He was 13 years older.
My mother called him "Ami". I think that's so cute. 🥰

Kerry here @tofu_library with What to do Wednesday!
I want to share my experience using Fold3 by ancestry. I had the opportunity to explore this free resource with my library card. Fold3 provides access to US military records, photos and documents. The site is easy to navigate and there is also a short video tutorial.
I started by typing my paternal Grandfather's name, he served during WWII. Bingo! Not only did I find him, there were links to actual records with photos. I was so thrilled. I clicked on one record and it was a Census from 1920. My grandfather, his brother and my Great-Grand parents were all listed. I found a 1930 Census as well. It was fun to see a snippet of time from their lives, where they worked, who they lived around and even what language they spoke. My Great-Great Grandparents lived next door! Fill out your census today so your ancestors can find you too! It got even better when I scrolled on and saw my Grandfather's original Draft Registration Cards from 1940. I clicked on the image and just like that I was brought to a window where I could zoom in and navigate the document. There was even a pane on the left hand side with all the information transcribed. I was truly amazed with all the information that was on Fold3, information even my Uncle (the family record keeper) didn't have.
The site was easy to find through the Town of Ulster Public Library's website townofulsterlibrary.org. Look on the right sidebar and click the link to Fold3. Sign in with your Ulster County library card today.

There I was on the streets with a cameraman, lighting equipment and nature surrounding me. The vibe was strong but it wasn't long before he captured my inner peace... peace in my eyes is a form of solitude within, a form of a rested SPIRIT.. I love scarves, headwraps, and hijabs... for so many years no one knew I really had hair. Ha! Well, they saw the waves and texture on my sides, but they still never saw me without a scarf. Why? Because I refuse to be like anyone else. I love not showing too much. Then I can be extreme with showing a little MORE, which means too much to me. LOL! I love rich gold's because they remind me of ancient Egypt. Which is symbolic of where I derive from. My ancestors, my state of being has everything to do with Egypt. The culture. The plight. 👊
