I had a session with a client this morning, whose main goal was weight loss. Their perception was that they should come in and smash themselves in the gym 3 times a week to start to lose weight. This is a fairly common notion, and one with which I disagree.

There are two sides to weight loss. Energy in and energy out. Energy in is food, which I talked about yesterday in my blog. Energy out is the energy you burn each day, Your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE). When you look at how that TDEE is made up, you see that exercise activity accounts for only about 5% of what you use. So focussing on this as the main part of losing weight, looking to sweat yourself to oblivion every time you train, doesn’t make sense to me.

When you look at the picture, you’ll see that your resting metabolic rate is the biggest portion of energy you expend. The way to increase your RMR, is to add muscle to your frame. Muscle needs more energy to maintain than adipose tissue(fat), so the more muscle you have, the more energy you burn just being alive. So it makes sense, if fat loss is your goal, to look to build muscle in your training sessions, by following a structured weight training plan, that follows simple principals of progressive overload. Add more weight, or more reps, to increase the total volume of work done week by week.

The next biggest portion of energy is spent on Non Exercise Activity Thermogenisis (NEAT). The energy you expend doing stuff every day - walking, fidgeting, cleaning the house, it all counts. The more you move throughout the day, the more energy you use.

The trouble with flogging yourself to death in a 45 minute high intensity session 3 days a week, especially if you are new to, or returning to training, is that this often leads to a decrease in NEAT. You ache from training, so you move less throughout the rest of the day. You have slightly increased the energy burned through activity, but then drastically reduce your NEAT, which has a much greater overall impact on your weight.

If your goal is fat loss, train to build muscle 2-4 x per week, track your steps and increase your daily average. Do 1 or 2 cardio sessions a week. Be consistent. Be patient

Y’all. I HATE being sick 😷(I mean, who doesn’t)??? And in all honesty, the thing that I’m most bummed about is how much less energy I have than usual. 😴😴😴😴Tonight was the first night I did physical activity since SATURDAY(which is a long time for me!) I usually do one to two workouts a day because I love it, but I really haven’t been able to muster up the energy. 💤 But tonight, I went to my sports league and CRUSHED two super intense games of dodgeball 🤾🏼‍♀️and I feel great! Well, I feel ready for bed too...BUT it made me feel like me again, even if only for a couple hours. Now, back to my drinking lots of fluids and getting tons of rest so I can get back to my regularly scheduled programming. Night y’all! 🌙 .
