When it comes to building core strength, Plank Pose reigns supreme due to its ability to work all four muscle groups in the stomach . . . oh, you thought you only had “abs?” Plank strengthens the rectus abdominis (visual “six-pack” muscles), transverse abdominis (deep core stabilizing muscles), and the internal and external obliques (hip and back mobilizing muscles).

As your abdominal muscles become stronger, the body becomes less reliant on the overuse and overextension of the back muscles. Instead, your body resorts to the now stronger core for everyday activities and exercise, which reduces pain in the lower back.

Achieving better posture is most easily done by ensuring the spine, mid, and upper body muscles are strong and healthy. HIIT is one of my favourite ways to train. You get in and get out quite fast whilst burning a ton of calories and having an incredibly effective workout in almost no time (10 to 20 minutes). More than enough literature has proven HIIT to be effective in both anaerobic cardiovascular conditioning as well as have aerobic benefits as well. In my peak conditioning in Olympic style taekwondo when I was competing in provincials, my resting heart rate was 38bpm simply because of the condition I was in through mostly HIIT 2x/week on top of my training. Furthermore, you not only burn a ton of calories during the workout, but you burn a significant amount of calories post workout too through something called EPOC (excess post-oxygen consumption) which is simply the amount of oxygen we need to consume to return our body to resting levels of physiological functioning. Now, HIIT sounds awesome and is usually done in intervals of 10-30 seconds of work with equivalent or double the rest, but it doesn't have to be complicated. In fact, some of the best HIIT workouts I have ever done are simple with only 1 or 2 exercises in total. I have made two examples here where we are either sprinting or swinging a kettlebell for our "work" intervals. If you're a beginner, I wouldn't even suggest HIIT. As you become more fit and want to include it in your routine, I would start with a work:rest ratio of 1:2 and build your way down to 1:1 in time. More advanced athletes can build it to 2:1. Never take these examples verbatim. Always adjust to your needs and fitness level.

When it comes to building some serious, lean muscle tissue, you have to feed your body the right calories and nutrients to support the protein synthesis process. Of course having enough protein is important (about 1g/lbs of bodyweight), but having enough calories is also a huge factor. We generally want to be in a slight caloric surplus of about 150-300 calories and measure our progress every 7 days or so. Make anecdotal notes in a good journal and training log and if you're not gaining weight, strength, reps, or having better performance in the gym, add another 150 calories and re-evaluate and continue this process until you're making serious gains.

As far as what food to eat, there are so many different options, but here are some of my favourites: oats (high in carbs and protein), cashews (one of the best and most convenient snacks to get a ton of calories in), oils (cooking with some extra oils can also add some calories and flavour to your meals), potatoes (super high in carbs to help performance and make gains) and chia and hemp seeds (both high in protein to feed your body the amino acids it needs to build serious mass).

Obviously, it’s not all black and white. We all have some habits that are more redeemable and some that are less. When it comes to fat loss, your progress is strongly determined by your habits and your choices. Of course, and I've said it a million times, every decision you make will either get you closer or farther away from your goals. It is the small choices where a lot of people seem to make mistakes include things like consuming too many liquid calories such as sodas and alcohol which can seriously add up in total caloric intake in a day; being sedentary and sitting for hours and hours in a day instead of getting more active; being too focused on cardio and not enough on storength training which often leads to higher amounts muscle loss rather than fat loss; scheduling in multiple cheat meals as opposed to refeed days which again adds up in calories very quickly; and finally, not setting yourself goals and not being patient in reaching your goals. To the last point, way too many people want results right here right now and forget it takes time and consistency. Everyone is so focused on shortcuts, magic pills and powders and expect to get results. It is about habits not shortcuts. Every decision you make either takes you one step closer or farther from your goals. Develop habits so that your choices always lead to the right destination.

🚫 STOP OLD FASHION "CRUNCHES" NOW 🚫  And START working on 1/2 TURKISH GET UPS!! 🙌 .

But seriously, crunches are 😖terrible for your back  and there are SO many other ways to work the core!! . 👉This variation of the Turkish Get Up finishes with a "bridge" to work the gluts as well. For progressions ... (1) You can start with simply coming up to the elbow then down then, (2) Progress up to the hand when ready then, (3) Add the bridge then, (4) Add a weight at the top to really crank things up!! . 💥Make sure to always reach straight towards the sky and maintain focus on top hand to keep a neutral spine!💥 .

First, the bad news: No matter how much physical effort you put into sculpting a smokin’ six-pack — crunches, planks, squats, cardio, HIIT — no one’s going to see them if they’re covered by a layer of flab.⠀

Now, the good news: You can learn how to get abs by eating healthy.⠀
You’ve probably heard the phrase “abs are made in the kitchen.”⠀
Well, that’s about 50 percent true — nutrition and exercise go together like Bey and Jay or Elizabeth and Philip. One without the other is “meh”; for real fireworks/results, you need both.⠀
So if you’re already crushing the exercise portion of the equation, then all you need to do is get your nutrition in order.⠀

 You can target belly fat, ⠀
⠀
BUT: It depends on the kind of belly fat you have. There are two types — subcutaneous fat and visceral fat.⠀
⠀
Subcutaneous fat is a fancy name for your spare tire/muffin top. You can’t target or spot-reduce this kind of fat. But if you reduce your overall body fat with a healthy, balanced diet and exercise, you’ll lose the tire muffin and reveal the glorious abs you’ve been working on.⠀

Visceral fat is the name for the kind of fat that is deep within your torso, building up primarily around your stomach, intestines, and liver.⠀
It’s also called “deep belly fat,” which has been linked to various health issues. You can target this type of fat by eating more fiber, fewer carbs, and getting more exercise and sleep.⠀

Amy came to me 3 months ago; she had a holiday to Mexico planned and wanted to get “beach ready” 🇲🇽👙 She had done classes, but had never lifted weights before🏋🏼‍♀️ I explained that we could achieve her goals by adopting some sound nutrition practices and using a lifting programme
