A #cyclamen men's suit for today's #georgianjanuary #masculinity by @dames_a_la_mode
The distinction between the masculinity and femininity of certain colors was different in the #18thcentury as compared to today. While this British suit boasts no floral designs, as opposed to the French fashion, it's still a flashy hot pink. Today, many men would think twice before they went out in such a "daring" colour, which is a pity sometimes. 💕

Suit of wool, silk and cotton, presumably British; c. 1770-80; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; accession number(s) 2013.516a–c. @metmuseum @metcostumeinstitute

New patterns are coming. I decided to take this time off to really tweak my base patterns. There were some fit issues with the coat i wore to fetes in 2019. I ended up deciding to toss that pattern that had been manipulated so much that it was beginning to distort. Time for a new pattern. I love the challenege and the math excites me!! .

The waistcoat was the centerpiece of male costume in 18th-century France. Similar to a vest, the hip-length garment was almost always worn as a part of the habit à la française, the precursor of the three-piece suit, which included a waistcoat, a coat, and breeches. The waistcoat did not necessarily match the rest of the outfit, and it often included the most decoration and embellishment. Flowers, stems, leaves, and caterpillars are embroidered in various colors in the areas that likely would be seen beneath the coat. The rest of the front features a repetitive floral pattern in white and black. A suit would be worn on formal occasions and at some informal social gatherings. These luxurious outfits epitomized the leisurely pursuits of the noblemen, and they were not suitable for physical labor or professional pursuits, which were considered incompatible with high status. This waistcoat was probably a product of a garment workshop, where embroidery would have been completed for the separate pieces of the waistcoat. Customers would buy the embroidered patterns from a merchant and take them to a tailor to be cut and assembled to fit them.

A portrait of André François Alloys de Theys d'Herculais (1692-1779). He was from a bourgeois family in Grenoble, and was a captain in the Clermont-Condé cavalry regiment. One of his campaigns in the north of Spain may be represented in the background. His formal military attire is earlier in date than the portrait. It was painted by Nicolas de Largillierre (1656-1746), in 1727. Largilliere may have owned the armor, since the breastplate appears in three other portraits by the artist of roughly the same date. This one exemplifies Largilliere's late, restrained style. ⚜🕊

Louis-Auguste de France, Louis XVI, who was given the title Duc de Berry at birth, was born in the Palace of Versailles. One of seven children, he was the second surviving son of Louis, the Dauphin of France, and Marie-Josèphe of Saxony. Louis-Auguste was overlooked by his parents who favored his older brother, Louis, duc de Bourgogne, but he died at the age of 9. Louis-Auguste, a strong and healthy boy but very shy, excelled in his studies and had a strong taste for Latin, history, geography, and astronomy and became fluent in Italian and English. He enjoyed physical activities such as hunting with his grandfather and rough play with his younger brothers. From an early age, Louis-Auguste was encouraged in another of his interests, locksmithing, which was seen as a useful pursuit for a child. Painted by Jean-Martial Fredou. 1760. ⚜🕊

A fashion plate from the 1779s Gallerie des Modes et Costumes Français. It depicts the back view of a man, who is carrying a walking stick. He wears a green coat, decorated with golden thread. He is also wearing white stockings and pink breeches, all made of silk. He has a black ribbon in his hair. This drawing was made by Claude-Louis Desrais (1746-1816), a French graveur. 🌿⚜

I was commissioned to make this lovely linen cravat. Completely #handsewn and dyed with tea! It was one of the smallest pieces I’ve made(all 7.5ft of it) and it was one of my favorites!

Just keep stitching. Just keep stitching.
That photo on my iPad is the portrait of Bernard, 1st Lord Bangor at #castleward He’s the chap that had the house built in 1760 - can you see he’s holding a drawing of the house?
Anyways- a family portrait is a perfect starting point for a relevant costume (how lucky is that?) so I’m attempting to create a representation of what Bernard is wearing. To be worn this weekend, 2 days away 🙈 But I am getting there! It won’t have all that gold trim or any buttons for this weekend, but there should be a wearable jacket 🤞 And I will get all those details added eventually.

Today's post is the sleeve gusset and construction. The only tricky part of this process is the gathers at the sleeve head. I have turned them toward the body so the gathers remain free to effect the rest of the sleeve.
Now, for me, this made turning the small allowance quite difficult. I solved this by cutting a small straight grain strip of the linen as long as the section of gathers and 1.5 cm in width as tape to encase the gathers.

I suppose it is back to the infinite felling I must do.

Today's post is about sleeve construction. Here you see the stroked gathers for the sleeves, both at the sleeve head and the wrist. They are stitched on one stitch per gather for maximum neatness. A little tip, I pre-roll the sides of the sleeve so the slit hem is easier and cleaner to manage when falling before I attach the cuff.
