The distinction between the masculinity and femininity of certain colors was different in the #18thcentury as compared to today. While this British suit boasts no floral designs, as opposed to the French fashion, it's still a flashy hot pink. Today, many men would think twice before they went out in such a "daring" colour, which is a pity sometimes. 💕

I was commissioned to make this lovely linen cravat. Completely #handsewn and dyed with tea! It was one of the smallest pieces I’ve made(all 7.5ft of it) and it was one of my favorites!

Just keep stitching. Just keep stitching.
That photo on my iPad is the portrait of Bernard, 1st Lord Bangor at #castleward He’s the chap that had the house built in 1760 - can you see he’s holding a drawing of the house?
Anyways- a family portrait is a perfect starting point for a relevant costume (how lucky is that?) so I’m attempting to create a representation of what Bernard is wearing. To be worn this weekend, 2 days away 🙈 But I am getting there! It won’t have all that gold trim or any buttons for this weekend, but there should be a wearable jacket 🤞 And I will get all those details added eventually.

A portrait of Louis Stanislas Xavier of France, Count of Provence, the later king Louis XVIII (1755-1824), in the robes of the Order of the Holy Spirit, the senior order of chivalry in France. During the French Revolution, the Order of the Holy Spirit was officially abolished by the French government, along with all other chivalric orders of the Ancien Régime, although when he was exiled, Louis Stanislas continued to acknowledge it. Painted by Antoine-François Callet (1741-1823), in 1788. 🕊

Today's post is the sleeve gusset and construction. The only tricky part of this process is the gathers at the sleeve head. I have turned them toward the body so the gathers remain free to effect the rest of the sleeve.
Now, for me, this made turning the small allowance quite difficult. I solved this by cutting a small straight grain strip of the linen as long as the section of gathers and 1.5 cm in width as tape to encase the gathers.

I suppose it is back to the infinite felling I must do.

Today's post is about sleeve construction. Here you see the stroked gathers for the sleeves, both at the sleeve head and the wrist. They are stitched on one stitch per gather for maximum neatness. A little tip, I pre-roll the sides of the sleeve so the slit hem is easier and cleaner to manage when falling before I attach the cuff.

Next here is the stroked gathers for the neckhole of the shirt. These are made by making two rows of small even running stiches and drawing them to fit the collar at matching points. Apparently each gather needed a stitch at least in the front so it was more slow and steady getting things neat and even along the collar. The cuff portion over laps by about 2.5cm for the thread buttons I will be making. There is something very seductive about this process, making something carefully and unpicking if necessary to make it clean, even and neat. #handmade #handsewing #periodsewing #18thcenturymensfashion #periodfashion #perioddress #historicaldress #fashion #1700s #1770s #18thcentury #18thcenturyfashion #historicalmethod #sewing

Construction of the neck gussets and shoulder pieces. Look at how tiny those historical sized stitches are. But there's something really calming about being very careful to get even tiny stitches. Like meditation. Though infinite woe and despair when I had to unpick so I could restitch because I didn't catch an obviously crooked stitch somehow. Progress on the neck slit and a special type of corner treatment I've seen made mention of. The edges are turned carefully over twice and secured with small hemming stitches and the joint is reinforced. I plan on making either lace or cloth ruffles and cuffs but somehow this little treatment makes me smile. #handsewing #linen #periodsewing #periodclothing #1700s #1770s #18thcenturyfashion #18thcenturymensfashion #historicalmethod #18thcenturydress #historicaldress #historicalcostumes

Does anyone know what that 'buttonholey' thing on top of the pocket flap seam is? This is an 18th century man's suit belonging to the Victoria & Albert Museum collections. I last visited the museum the summer before last and took these photos. The strange detail has puzzled me since then. Is it somehow functional or just mending? If you know please tell me!
